This is how I kicked the profiling habit.

Decide to move and put most dvds in a storage unit months before I moved.

Move and have less storage than previous home.

Had my hard drive go down.

Dropped it off to a friend who pulled all my files from old drive and installed a new drive.

Bought a new laptop (Still haven't installed DVD Profile on it) and have my pc with a blank hard drive (haven't installed windows yet).

Decided to go through my collection and get rid of some titles.

December took 600 titles and gave to my sister.

January have another 6 boxes (360) ready to take up north in Feb. and another 500 I need to box up.

in 2 months culled just under 1500 titles from my collection.

I plan on getting rid of most of my collection by the end of this year.

Going to have one hell of a garage sale this spring.

You don't, by any chance, have "Murdoch Mysteries" or "Doctor Who" Blu-rays you want to sell?

No I don't - never got into the Blu-ray discs. Only have a few and still haven't opened and hooked up my Blu-Ray player.

That would be a hassle with 8000 titles.  and then shipping.

I keep meaning to do the same. Go though and purge out some titles, more to make some space than anything. Kid's cartoons too. They've gotten too old for many of them. Now, I only have about 2400 titles and have unboxed ~700 and put them in to a disk storage unit...and I still have space issues.  I can't imagine 8800 titles. Must be pretty overwhelming Good luck.

On a smaller scale, I have been considering a similar exercise and options for disposal. One idea I had was to create a temporary online collection that reflected the sale items, including maybe prices. Not sure if that's a workable idea, but I thought I would share it with you.

I've got the animated / Disney movies going to a son who has a 2 year old and another on the way.  My daughter likes musicals, so any musicals are going to her.

I have a 2nd database started with the ones I'm keeping and using my original online as my starting point removing the ones that I've gotten rid of, and transferring the ones I'm keeping to my 2nd.

What interesting ways did you think about for disposing of the rest? Sell / donate / other?

Are you aware of any interesting or special ways to benefit children, veterans, emerging nations, etc with DVD donations? I plan to take a look at that myself sometime in the future.

No sooner than I thought of it, I Googled to find this interesting site. I cannot vouch for their legitimacy, but on the surface it seems OK.

I've seen that site. I've got boxes label for family, Armed forces, church organizations (through my Uncle), local public library,  local fire departments (had a guy buying about 30 titles at the garage sale, he worked graveyard shift at the local FD, gave him the 30), just need to decide what's going where.

Some good ideas - hadn't thought about local FD. Their EMS helped us many times when our parents used to live with us.

Many hospitals, nursing homes, rehab facilities and the like will gratefully accept movies. They frequently have programs that use film to help their clients.

I usually have contacted the activities director to find out how that particular facility handles donations.

Quite often the facility, such as Children's Hospital, has a room set up for the family to borrow any movies they want to watch.

Several retirement communities I've donated to have a weekly "movie might" that the residents can get together to view the film together.

Unfortunately a lot of worthy places are actually not non-profit, so you don't get a tax deduction, but I guess that doesn't always matter.
