| Posted: | | | | Is the "An HBO Limited Series" on the cover, part of the title? I ask because it's on the mass-market BD and DVD releases, but not the steelbook release? OK to add to the steelbook BD profile, so that the credits link to 1 title? | | | My one wish for the DVD Profiler online database: Ban or remove the disc-level profiles of TV season sets. It completely screws up/inflates the CLT. FACT: Imdb is WRONG 70% of the time! Misspelled cast, incomplete cast, wrong cast/crew roles. So for those who want DVD Profiler to be "as perfect as Imdb", good luck with that. Stop adding UNIT crew! They're invalid credits. Stop it! |

| Posted: | | | | IDK, I would disagree, especially since there's no season title with it (Complete First Season or even Complete Series).
There are a couple other examples (at least that I have in my collection): - I Am the Night: Limited Series - The Missing: A Starz Limited Series - Years and Years: The Limited Series | | | Last edited: by The Movieman |

| Posted: | | | | So by this measure, "A Starz Limited Series" (which is in the edition field) be removed? Or should An HBO Limited Series be moved to the edition slot? |

A "Special Edition" distinguishes that disc from its regular version, just as a "Director's Cut" or "Extended Edition" would do. "A Stars Limited Series", however, says absolutely nothing about the disc. It says something about who broadcasted the show, but we already have the "Studios" field for that, and apparently it tells us that we shouldn't expect top many episodes of it, but it says nothing about the disc that you have in your hand. There are plenty of DVD's that have "A Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Original" on the cover - I shudder to think that we should include that as well. What's next? Will even something along the lines of "A Steven Spielberg Film" be put info the "Edition" field? I hope Not. Really, not everything we see on the cover is part of the Title or the Edition.
I must confess that I don't understand that "Limited Series" label anyway - what does that even mean? Any TV show is bound to end some time, right? So in fact all shows actually turn out to be limited. 'The Big Bang Theory' was limited to twelve seasons, for instance. That's quite a few seasons, but still, eventually it reached its limit. Was 'Big Little Lies' considered a "Limited Series"? And when the second season came around, did it then cease to be "Limited"? Or not? Where's the cut off point, exactly? How many episodes can there be, before it's no longer considered "Limited"? Six? Eight? Ten? Twenty? A hundred? Says who? Is every show that was cancelled during of after its first season considered "Limited"? To me, such labels are utterly meaningless. | | | Last edited: by T!M |

Quoting T!M: Quote: I must confess that I don't understand that "Limited Series" label anyway - what does that even mean? It's of course a marketing label. But it does serve a purpose to the customer. Most TV shows produced in the US are produced for as long as there are enough viewers to watch them. By design they have no defined ending other than "no one's watching it anymore". A limited series promises the viewer "we have a story to tell that has a defined ending and we'll do it in this many episodes". Usually a limited series has no more than 10 episodes. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

| Posted: | | | | Further to the Limited Series part, with Watchmen in particular, the show got more viewers than expected, creating demand for a second season. However, the creative team had only the one story to tell and had no plans to continue the story, so a second season would only arise if they were to come up with a brand new story, despite the undeniable success of the 2019 series. Another example is The Prisoner: Patrick McGoohan only wanted to do the one season and there is no way he would have ever been convinced to do a second season regardless of ratings. Sometimes, like V you do get Limited Series that are intended to test the waters for an ongoing season, but in those cases the initial story tends to be somewhere in the vicinity of three episodes. |
