| | Posted: | | | | I agree that DVD only players will eventually be phased out. Sure you can still buy a VCR. But I bet you couldn't if DVD players were backward compatible with VHS tapes. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to imagine a day when DVDs will be phased out as well. There's nothing stopping a person from playing a Blu-ray disc on a Blu-ray player today on a conventional SD display. In fact, there's even a few minor improvements you'd get.
If they can ween people off DVD only players, then it's a lot easier to ween them off SD DVDs. The only barrier at this point is cost. But that will sort itself out eventually. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here.

I feel sorry for the fools who just walk into a store and pick up a player without doing any research ahead of time. That's why I went with the PS3. At least I knew about the problem going in. I feel sorry for the fools who just walk into a store and pick up a player without doing any research ahead of time.
I'm not sure I'll even use the advanced features (I haven't on HD DVD), but I want the ability to be there if I ever change my mind. Same for me... Timing is good. I will go the reverse way, upgrading the TV first and then, in few months time, when Profile 2 players are readily available, I will probably be buying a blu player. It's not about wanting to watch the bonus stuff, it's about being able to if I ever change my mind. Too many people were holding off on switching to Hi-Def because they were afraid of picking the losing format. I think sales can really get a boost now. There is only one big issue in Europe. I agree to a point. Laserdisc was only ever promoted in USA and Japan. HDM is promoted world wide, and the Home Cinema crowd is a lot larger today than it was during the times of LD, so I don't think it'll wither away. But I do agree that DVD is good enough for the mass market. In Norway they promoted the LD at some market places I visited, this is a loooong time ago and it was a flopp, due to the very low number of features. Only Nine (if I remember) features was available at that time, with norwegian text that was... | | Posted: | | | | I went red back on July 4, 2006 and bought a PS3 and went purple back in May of 2007. Like most people, I am glad this format war may be winding down. I have 4 HD-DVD combo disc. I only want to buy 1 out of those 4 on Blu-ray to have the movie in HD and that is Order of the Phoenix. The other 3 are fine watching the DVD side and letting the PS3 upconvert them. I have 2 HD DVD only disc that I also have in SD, King Kong and Van Helsing. Only King King would I be willing to get on Blu-ray. I have 5 HD DVDs that I do not have in any other format. Transformers is the only one that I must have in HD. The others I could replace with SD and be happy. However, if any of the disc get released on Blu-ray for the same price as SD, I will buy Blu.
The way things stand now, I will not be buying any more HD DVDs. I only have a total of 11, and I do not want to have to keep a separate player in my living room taking up space to only play 11 HD DVD.
Don't get me wrong, I have been very happy with my HD DVD player, but I have also been happy with Blu-ray on my PS3. I think there will be a lot of people thinking along these lines and stop buying HD DVD disc even though they have a player. This in turn will force Universal and Paramount to go Blu if they want to sell HD disc and the days of HD DVD will be over. |
