part of the problem now occuring:
TV Series on DVD come in 2 separate types:
  • Complete Series/Season sets
  • Anthologies of Episodes that do not form a complete series or season.
  • the first is explained in the rules, the second is not.

It is a TV Series: this rule should cover it. Friends: it does not in the second case.
Anthologies of Episodes: The One With All The Birthdays, The One With All ... (not explained or not clear) (DVD box title; DVD Disc title or what ever level below the series title)

Edition: (is covered in the main title section)
The Edition field is for distinguishing between DVDs, and for indicating special versions and collections (for example The Criterion Collection, Widescreen, Full-Screen Edition). It's usually safe to use one of the built-in selections if appropriate. If you are using a non-standard description, take it from the DVD box, and ensure it will help distinguish between different releases of the same title.
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.

It's funny, the more I look at this the more I'm convinced it's number 3.

The reason I'm leaning this way is simply because of what a title is.  The whole point of a title is to convey what something is.  Making the title "The one with all the XXX" doesn't really tell us anything, now does it?

And since when has the title been created so that it conveys anything?

What I would hold locally is of course completely different from what should be contributed. But the rules don't say anything about the title being helpful for someone to find it.

Anyway if they have the UPC then they can use that can't they?  If they haven't.. well tough cheese really..

It's funny.  I was just reading a thread on another DVD message board.  It started in one direction but sort of devolved into a discussion how this particular attitude was what was driving new users away from this product.  This wasn't some kind of theory.  They were actual people who walked away less than impressed and moved on to competitors.

Not that big a deal.  We've got our clubhouse and they can just go pound sand.

It would be a lot more helpful if the "add by title" window searched the edition as well as the title when doing a substring search.
That way, it would come up with the other "Friends" titles even if "Friends Collection" was in the edition field.

I used the comment since I saw something in another thread on these boards which expressed this same thought.

I think the situation is rubbish personally. I would try and make films / tv episodes easy to find - but the rules are treated so strictly that usability and common sense is ruled out.

    what rule?
so you could enter in all Friends titles: Friends Collection and then it stops being a distinguishing factor!

If "all Friends titles" had Friends Collection on the box then that is exactly what you would have to do. But they don't. Only this series of titles seems to have it listed on the cover so only this series of titles would have it as the edition (or the title - depending on how you read the cover).

I think this is turning into another case of not being able to see the forest for the trees.  Happens all the time.

To put this differently, when you deal with a Walt Disney Treasure, the titles already informs you that you have a collection of Mickey Mouse cartoons.  The edition information just tells us the marketing brand.  In this other case, you'd have to be clairvoyant to know what the heck you're dealing with.  It isn't until we get to the edition field that we're finally informed that it's a collection of Friends episodes.  Maybe I'm just dumb, but that doesn't sound like edition information to me.

To put it even more differently, if we somehow lost the edition field, nobody would be able to identify what the heck this thing is.  That doesn't hold true for any of the other profiles that include edition information.  Well, I'm sure there's an oddball out there somewhere, but generally speaking.

Yeah, but you are overlooking this part:
The Edition field is for distinguishing between DVDs
you can not use the edition field to indicate it belongs to a collection. You can only use the edition field to indicate if these are not unique titles! and so far that I know of there are no other edtions of these titles:
Friends: The One With All The Birthdays
Friends: The One With All The Babies
Friends: The One With All The Weddings

You most certainly can use the Edition field JUST for collections regardless of whether there are any other versions of those films o not:

    Fox Studio Classics
    Fox Film Noir
    Criterion Collection
    Cinema Classics
    Classic Monster
    Columbia Classics
    Fox War Classics
    Hollywood Classics
    MGM Contemporary Classics
    MGM Vintage Classics
    Miramax Classics
    Silver Screen Classics
    Universal Cinema Classics

These are all used as "Editions" even though many, if not most, have no other releases available.

but that is not the only thing the edition field is for...

So the rules shows us 3 different circumstances for the edition field...

    - Distinguish between DVDs
    - Indicating Special Versions
    - Indicating Collections

If it says "DTS Collection" then yes... but if it don't say it is an actual collection (or indicate it with another word) then (in the way I read it at least) there needs to be another version to distinguish it frem... as it would not be a collection IMO.
