| Posted: | | | | Again, you are wrong: These are the Top 10 selling HD-format discs in the USA for the week ending 3/18/07. Notice #8... Blu-ray X-Men-Last Stand. #8 selling disc at the time, with 899 discs sold. #9... Blu-ray Fifth Element, 883 sold. #10... Blu-ray Babel, 880 sold. These are tiny, tiny, tiny numbers. These do not belong on mass media top 10 sellers lists. Let's look at all HD-format disc sales since the inception of HD-DVD and Blu-ray: Ok... HD-DVD & Blu-ray sales for January through March 2007 were a total of 1.2 million. Standard DVD sales for the same period was 54 million. So, finally, HD disc sales are nearly 2% of DVD sales. THAT's what my PacMan chart means. | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

| Posted: | | | | I remember those charts! Kind of brings it all into perspective when the top seller whips out a whopping 40k in actual sales. Not shipped to retailers, but real live sales. And those were lifetime numbers at the time of print. I think the last Barney disk did over 40k in standard def. Pick a high-def format and enjoy it, but arguing over which one is going to take over the world is...premature, at best. When 100 people can get together and completely skew a sales chart, you haven't even hit niche status. |

| Posted: | | | | Are you serious? It was obvious, to anyone with a brain, that he was talking about single title sales. He was talking about the fact that a title could sell fewer than 1000 copies and still make the top 10. You then responded, completely off the point, about total sales of all titles. More and more you sound like a Sony spin master. on a side note, I find it quite funny that Sony was making such a big deal about shipping 100,000 copies of Casino Royale yet said nothing about the fact that they only sold 28,308 of them. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | Reality check: in order to be the 10th best selling standard DVD title for a week, a title will sell 40,000 to 50,000 copies or more. Yet an HD disc need sell fewer than 900 copies the same week to be the 8th best seller for that same week.
Yeah, let's talk about total sales...
1.2 million HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs combined for three months of their highest sales ever. Roughly 400,000 total discs in both formats per month, fewer than 100,000 total discs per week. With one disc selling 28,000+ discs to sell more than eight times more than the second place seller.
Those same three months, 54 million standard DVDs were sold. (Again roughly) 18 million discs per month, 4.5 million discs per week. So standard DVDs sell nearly four times as many units in a week as both HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs sell in three months.
HD format disc sales are nearly non-existent in the big picture. The lead Blu-ray has over HD-DVD is less than one very poor selling DVD. One blockbuster HD-DVD would change the picture entirely, but such a change would still keep HD formats at nearly nothing compared to standard DVDs.
I expect you to twist these easy-to-understand figures into something resembling Blu-ray propaganda at your earliest convenience, AS... blah, blah, blah... | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

With that said, I'm off to watch Flags of Our Fathers on HD-DVD. I am of a number of minds on the HD wars... I have zero love or trust of Sony. They, like Apple, have repeatedly shown their contempt for their consumers by either pricing licensing far too high or eliminating other companies' R&D in their patents; and by placing a higher value on pricing their equipment high, while the competition undercuts their prices and because of more companies doing additional R&D, watching their competitors walk away (eventually) with the consumers' dollars. (Minus 1 for Blu-ray) The possible higher quantity of content might eventually be used. (Plus 1 for Blu-ray) The street price on HD-DVD players seems to be dropping every week. Even if HD-DVD goes belly up, a smaller investment in HD-DVD format equipment makes it look more attractive at the moment, because Blu-ray is failing to use their higher capacity discs for anything at all. (Plus 1 HD-DVD) More studios on Blu-ray. But I like Universal's back list as much as I like other studios' back lists. If only more vintage movie would be released in HD format. (Plus 1 for Blu-ray, minus 2 for both formats) There are fewer than ten Blu-ray and HD-DVD titles that I would care to own, even for free. (minus 100 for both formats) I'd rather spend my money on a high-fidelity surround sound system than a disc player, but, at the moment, I can afford none. (Plus 5 on Denon or other surround sound receiver, minus 5 for an HD-DVD player, minus 6 for a more expensive Blu-ray player) So there you have it Blu-ray = -1 +1 +1 -2 -100 -6 = -107 HD-DVD = +1 -2 -100 -5 = -106 Denon surround sound Rx = +5 I'll wait it out. | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

And completely unrelated to HD, just from a friend who is a fan of film: " Today the news of DRACULA: YEAR ZERO hit the ether, heralding the return of Alex Proyas... Now, this is gonna be one heck of an exciting project to follow, as it also reunites Proyas with DARK CITY producer, Michael De Luca, so in my book, the sky is the limit for this one. And this just when I though my love for all things Universal couldn't possibly get any greater... I mean, just look at all the amazing projects they've got coming our way, with everything from DOOMSDAY, HELLBOY: THE GOLDEN ARMY, THE WOLF MAN, and WANTED looming on the horizon. And now also DRACULA: YEAR ZERO. It should also be noted that Guillermo Del Toro recently stated that never before had he worked for a studio that offered up the kind of freedom and support that Universal did on HELLBOY: THE GOLDEN ARMY, and when you look at the talent that they've currently got in their stables, with names like Neil Marshall, Timur Berkmambetov, Clive Barker, Paul Greengrass, Ridley Scott, Del Toro, and Proyas among them, then they surely must be doing something right." (Minus 1 for Blu-ray) I guess you have more trust for Microsoft and Toshiba (that would be a very blind view of MS and Toshiba). Maybe you think MS and Toshiba gives out hugs and kisses to consumers and businesses, but most know better. MS has lost more court case and paid out more money for illegal business practices than any other company in recent history. Toshiba has screwed businesses, including Sony (over the DVD disc structure), out of billions of dollars in royalties. Sony is one of 3 major companies that owns patents on Blu-ray. It is completely irrational to only place Sony's name with Blu-ray, especially, when Blu-ray was born from Panasonic. Don't forget the fact that over 80% of the CE industry is in support of Blu-ray. Plus, Blu-ray is a 5 step manufacturing process and HD DVD is a 11 step process. Blu-ray has the potential to be a lot cheaper to produce than SD DVD in the future. You just have to be able to see further than a couple months ahead when it comes to new formats.
The BDA is very logical because they understand that there has to be a balance that has to be met for a successful product. The course they are following is the same as so many products before it. Don't forget standalone VHS players were over $1000 (closer to $2000...imagine that with inflation included) when they made their debut. Standalone DVD players were over $1000 when they made their debut. DVD burners made their debut at well over $1000 and stayed at that price for a very long time. Standalone Blu-ray players started out at over $1000, so what's the difference? I can't recall any standalone player prices from other eras that dropped over 50% in price in a year.

(Plus 1 HD-DVD) Money wasted is money wasted. HD DVD players will get down to $99 pretty soon (firesale). People just don't want to be on a losing team...period. That's why people are waiting for the format war to be over. At this point in the format war, people that want HD movies but are still afraid to make a purchase just need even larger writing on the wall. A good example would be when Universal goes neutral. That day is when the format war will be over between Blu-ray and HD DVD.
Blu-ray is NOT failing to use their higher capacity discs. They are making use of their higher bandwidth as well as the additional capacity (Blu-ray exclusive studios). Any Blu-ray owner with a decent amount of titles knows your statement is not accurate. Blu-ray already have complete HD discs (no 480 material on the disc). They have more planned as well. That is what HD discs should be able to do for all titles in the near future. 2 disc are suppose to be for additional contain above and beyond what would be on a 1 disc title (at it's native resolution). | | | To err is human... ----------- 473 Blu-ray Titles | | | Last edited: by Ascended_Saiyan |

What happened to the days when you were saying that Blu-ray had so much capicity that they only needed one disc for the feature and bonus materials.
You also fail to understand that HD DVD can give as good as if not better picture quality than Blu-ray with their higher bandwidth. HD DVD was able to do it without having to build a monster machine costing an arm and a leg.
FYI...I am format neutral. I have an HD DVD player and a Blu-ray player. |
