LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Blu-ray high-definition movie discs outsold films on the rival HD-DVD format by 2-to-1 in the United States in the first half of 2007, Home Media Research said on Tuesday.
The division of Home Media Magazine said total sales of Blu-ray discs, using a Sony Corp (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research)-backed technology, totaled 1.6 million units from January 1 through July 1, compared with 795,000 HD-DVD discs sold in that period.
HD-DVD was developed by Toshiba Corp (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research) and backed by Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) and film studios such as Warner Bros.

Both formats were launched in spring of 2006. An estimated 3.7 million high-definition discs have been sold, including 2.2 million in Blu-ray and 1.5 million in HD-DVD through the end of July, according to Home Media.
A Home Media spokeswoman said Blu-ray got a further boost in August from strong sales of the "300" title. Stephen Nickerson, senior vice president, market management at Warner Home Video (TWX.N: Quote, Profile, Research), reported sales of about 190,000 Blu-ray units of the film, versus 97,000 in HD-DVD since July 31.
The industry-wide standards war is reminiscent of the VHS and Betamax battle.
Blockbuster Inc (BBI.N: Quote, Profile, Research), the largest U.S. provider of home movie entertainment, in June set out plans to line its shelves with Blu-ray DVDs, saying Blu-ray rentals were "significantly outpacing" HD-DVD rentals. It seems Blu-ray has increased it's sales lead to 700,000 discs over HD DVD WITHOUT any extra disc releases from Fox, MGM, or the newly acquired Blu-ray support from other studios (Starz Home Entertainment, etc.). Plus, HD DVD had a 2 month head start on disc sales.  I wonder what the total worldwide Blu-ray disc sales are so far. | | | To err is human...

So I'm to spend a thousand bucks or more (a player for each format plus the cost of the discs) to see 18 films (that I already own on DVD) in HD? Not exactly "plenty of material" in my view. You're not likely to want to buy many standard DVDs once you've been bitten by the HD bug so the costs remain pretty much the same as always... That is to say WAY TOO BLOODY MUCH!!! Sometime early this week, Circuit City updated their web listings for Toshiba's HD DVD players, and apparently someone at the retail giant got their wires crossed.
Instead of listing the HD DVD camp's "five free HD DVDs" offer among the list of rebates included with the Toshiba players, Circuit City listed the Blu-ray camp's "five free Blu-ray discs" offer instead. Ahh, BSG with lossless sound. I would not mind owning that set, but 6 discs for 13 episodes w/ TrueHD plus SD DVD extras?! My shelf space is at a premium. Weeds - Season 2 on BD is 1080p w/ 7.1 LPCM plus extras on 2 discs (12 episodes). | | | To err is human...

Reality check:
BSG Season 1 is 13 episodes + the mini series = 756 mins. (126 mins/disc.)
Weeds Season 2 is 12 episodes = 284 mins. (142 mins/disc.)
Whee, BD holds 16 minutes more on each disc and much less extras, we're so impressed. You must have missed the part about the 7.1 LPCM. Plus, the 2nd BD is not used to capacity. In other words, you would be impressed if you realized that. Weeds - Season 1 was 10 episodes and fit on a 50GB BD.  | | | To err is human...
