I like how the last sentence of the press rleease says that today's announcement does not include Steven Spielberg movies.

Why? Because he doesn't want anything to do with HD-DVD. Ever wonder why UNiversal can't release his movies? Now you know.

Good to see MS paying off more companies. Way to go Mr. Gates.

Hey, with the $50 million, we can get Transformers 2 now. The $100 million is good for Shrek the Fourth.

Desperation Move and Cash Grab? Or Bloodier Blu-ray/HD DVD War?

Quote:
Here's the official announcement being made later today. Note how there's no mention of the money Paramount (I'm told $50 million) and DreamWorks Animation (I'm told $100 million) is receiving for "promotional consideration" from the HD DVD side to continue with what is widely recognized as the losing high-def format. Also note that Steven Spielberg is still fence-sitting (although this fall Sony will release in Blu-ray its catalogue title Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, the first of Spielberg's pictures to do so in either format). Sources are telling me these moves are "really out of desperation" and "a callous cash grab". Hollywood is lopsided in favor of Blu-ray: until now, 7 of the 8 major movie studios (Disney, Fox, Warner, Paramount, Sony, Lionsgate and MGM) supported Blu-ray, and 5 of them (Disney, Fox, Sony, Lionsgate and MGM) release their movies exclusively in the Blu-ray format. Only Universal was exclusively HD-DVD. The $100 mil is a huge $$$ infusion for the Shrek-dependent public company DreamWorks Animation -- especially curious because, earlier this year, Jeff Katzenberg told a Bank of America conference that he expected "neither" high-def DVD format to win the war "because they're not going to become the next platform." I have more analysis below:...

Anything to keep Blu-ray from pulling the plug on HD DVD (looking at you MS)...    Isn't this what HD DVD had Blu-ray investigated from (they had no such findings BTW)?  Maybe it's time HD DVD is investigated for this one.  Blu-ray consistently outsells HD DVD 2:1 on Paramount/Dreamworks titles.  It  doesn't make business sense to drop your biggest HD money maker (Blu-ray) unless they are paid off...period.

I guess this is another example of your 'FACTS' that people can't deal with.  "I'm told" and "Sources are telling me" are the lines use by people how don't have any 'real' facts to base their article on.  Without proof, it is all propoganda...though it doesn't surprise me in the least that you have jumped on it as truth.

You base that on what...current DVD sales numbers?  Did you think that it could have been a lot more for some regions over others?

Did I think that DVD sales numbers could have been a lot more than what? Than they would have been if there were no way to defeat DVD region coding?

Not really, I'm a movie aficionado and if there are multiple versions of a title I want in different regions I buy the best version. If that means for example Universal US gets my money instead of Universal UK for a particular release, then so be it, they deserve it for producing a better product.

But the mass market DVD consumer doesn't even think about disc importing, and that's where almost all of a studio's sales are.

The DVD forum has realised this with their HD DVD spec, as have Warners with many of their DVD releases now being region free.

THAT is an article, NOT written by me, about something that JUST happened.  This is questionably anti-trust behavior.  Therefore, to have sources named in this (at less at the moment) would be crazy.  But, you don't see that...do you?  Did you see the question mark on the article title?

mmm you are a bit naive. You really think Sony didn't pay the BR exclusive studios anything?? Oh no they just bought the studios... talking about a monopoly

Did you read the BusinessWeek article just above your post?  If that were true, the European investigation (on MS and Toshiba request) would have found something...which they didn't.  The studios signed up with Blu-ray due to the extra security and flexibility with region encoding, space, and bandwidth.  ...And let's not forget install base with the PS3.

Are you really that blind?  How many of Blu-ray's 'exclusive studios' are owned or partially owned by Sony?  Do you really think that didn't play a HUGE part in it?

I did see the question mark on the title...did you?  You are the one who quoted the article and then made the statement: "Blu-ray consistently outsells HD DVD 2:1 on Paramount/Dreamworks titles.  It  doesn't make business sense to drop your biggest HD money maker (Blu-ray) unless they are paid off...period."

That article has zero facts yet you seem to believe it...I wonder why that is?  I don't care what the reason for not listing sources is...if you don't list any facts, it is pure propoganda and speculation.  But you go right ahead and make the assumption that there is something fishy going on.  I will wait until ALL the 'facts' are in.

Really?  And you have a quote from him where he says this?  I would be very interested to see him make this statement.

Why would you buy into unsubstantiated rumors?  I didn't see any 'proof' of those claims.  While it may make sense to A_S that Paramount and DreamWorks wouldn't make this switch without some form of 'bribe' I am not convinced.  It would be incredibly stupid for either of these companies...especially Microsoft...to risk the legal troubles such a deal would lead to.  I prefer to wait for all the facts to come in.

It looks like we are heading into a SACD/DVD-A situation.  Thanks MS!  Way to try to kill HD Optical.    If you can't win, kill it.

At least, just selling to PS3 owners will be profitable in the long run...one way or another.

A_S already linked that article.  As I said to him, I didn't see any facts in that article.  I see the usual, "I'm told" and "Sources are telling me" crap that are the meat of tabloid journalism.  I am sorry, but I prefer verifiable facts not inuendo presented as fact.
