In a note to retailers, Paramount has officially canceled all previously-announced upcoming Blu-ray releases.

As expected, Paramount won't release a single of its previously-announced upcoming Blu-ray titles, including 'Blades of Glory,' 'Next,' 'Top Gun,' 'The Jack Ryan Collection' and 'Face/Off.' Instead, each of the titles will now be HD DVD exclusive.

Retailers received official word late Monday that all five Blu-ray titles would be cancelled, and that existing orders would not be fulfilled.

EDIT: Well, I just saved somee hard earned money. I had The Jack Ryan Collection and Top Gun pre-ordered.
Signature banned: Reason out of date...

If he does not retract that misinformation, I am tempted to post my answer word for word for the world to see.

What is funny is that he goes to stipulate that we don't have a reason to spend that kind of money on HD DVD. Yet he thinks it is true because someone told him it was, [someone] who has no clue about this situation."

Where is that from? I'm curious to read more.

As people are quick to point out, though:

Bill Hunt used to be a great champion of home theater enthusiasts. Note the use of past tense. These days it appears he's turned into a frothing-at-the-mouth fanboy. [...]

But the way he was carrying on when this news broke, spewing what amounts to speculations at best and outright lies at worst, and basically throwing a giant tantrum... well, it's pretty disappointing and very unprofessional.

Later in the day I guess he decided to tone it down a bit.

Had to tone it down is more accurate.  Bill Hunt's a tool, notorious among fellow DVD folks since the "early days."

Funny how Bill Hunt was sooo great and couldn't be wrong at any point until he stopped riding the HD DVD train.  Then he magically became a bastard.  Some people...

You can find the thread here.  Go to the last several pages and search for posts by "amirm".  He's stated very clearly that Microsoft hasn't paid a cent.  Although they will offer to help with VC-1 encoding.  But they offer help to anyone who asks for it.

Amir (who has posted here in the past and is a Microsoft VP) has stated multiple times over at AVSForum that Microsoft has not paid a single cent to Paramount/Dreamworks.  Nor have they provided any form of compensation.

This bit about Microsoft paying $150 million is pure rubbish.  It sounds like $150 million was paid, but not by Microsoft.  There's no reason to keep spreading this false rumor.

Quick question...

Technically, if a company gives a person or group $150 million to pay for something (for them).  Who's name shows up on the bill?  The company's name?  Or the person or group that paid Company B?

Now in that case, indirectly, who paid for it?

Welcome to the corporate world!

I've never, anywhere, said that he was "great," note the 'early days' jab.  Pay attention.

In an attempt at some "neutral" stuff here, I'm awaiting my copy of The Crow on BD -- anyone pick it up yet among the UK folks?

Quick reminder...

I have no interest in having further discussion with you.  I know I've mentioned this in the past, but it's been a while.

And it has nothing to do with being an HD-DVD zelot.  I was extremely close to getting a PS3 over the weekend and have no problem going neutral.  And given the recent news, I expect I will before the years out.

Here's something that might be interesting...

Quote:
Josh,

Thank you for your email. I will answer your questions as best I can.

1 - As far as we can tell here in marketing, this exclusive deal could last as long as 18 months. I spoke to my director earlier today and even she does not have all the details of this agreement. She did mention we have a lot of clauses which would allow us to release certain films on Blu-ray during this time period.

2 - I cannot comment on this question.

3 - Right now it looks like all announced Blu-ray titles will be or have been canceled. As I mentioned before you still may see some Blu-ray releases in the next 18 months though. I can not get in to the details of that possibility though.

4 - Actually we were as surprised as everyone else today when we found out about agreement with HD-DVD. We found out when we arrived to work today and there had been no rumors at all circulating. I think it surprised us all because we have been working on producing and marketing Blu-ray versions of films such Blades, Face/Off, Top Gun, etc. through the end of last week. I can tell you we have received many calls today from various talent and certain directors voicing their displeasure with this decision. We even had VP's of other studios calling in from what I hear. I have never seen this type of atmosphere in the office. In a way we were on damage control throughout the day. That is really all I can tell you for now.

Take care Josh!

These were the questions...

I have a couple of questions regarding you guys going HD-DVD exclusive today. As you can imagine it was a big surprise to many of us.

1. Is this exclusivity indefinite or for a limited time frame?

2. The rumor circulating AVS is that Microsoft has contributed money to Paramount to go exclusive. Is this true?

3. Will certain announced movies still be released on Blu-ray? What about Transformers & Indiana Jones?

4. How long have you or your department known that this deal was being negotiated?

Thanks!

~Josh

There was something I noticed about the amount of Paramount releases.  It's been about a year and a half and Paramount has released under 35 titles (if I remember correctly).  Basically, the 18 month contract is for about maybe 40 movies or so.

On the other hand, Fox just announced 29 titles for the 3rd quarter alone.  When Paramount comes back, I'll be ready to purchase some of those titles that were HD DVD exclusive during that period.

It might be interesting if it was verifiable.  For all we know it is a fabricated document.  But thanks for sharing these facts.

That is a huge assumption.  I mean, if I were going to spend $150 million I would expect more than 40 releases.

Yeah, hate to sound paranoid, but studio e-mail drones tend to speak like computers and be very, very vague.

Not go into details about "damage control" and "various talent and certain directors voicing their displeasure."

But hey, it could be a "source" higher up in the foodchain...

The last statement is certainly amusing, and I have one just as unverified.

"Most of my filmmaker friends, in fact all of them that I have had a conversation regarding this with... have told me... HD DVD is the format to go with."

Every company seems to write off HD for Blu-ray I am glad to see some one is ready to fight Sony. After all the crap Sony have done with rootkits etc. Sony should not be trusted at all cost.

I guess "interesting" means verifiable facts to you...oh well.  One way to find out if it's a fabricated document.  PM Josh (AVS Insider) and ask him for the complete email address and phone number.  Then you can call or email and find out who's on the other end.

The less than 40 releases were based on the last 18 months or so.  And, yes, that is alot of money for that amount of titles.  Remember, there is no evidence to say Paramount will try to speed up production (especially when it takes longer to master great PQ on HD DVDs due to the lesser bandwidth).

Don't fool yourself into thinking it was anything other than the money.  Blu-ray gave Paramount twice the sales, 66% more space, and more than 30% more bandwidth.  You know it was for the money.

As far as rootkits are concerned, you should even start to type Sony's name before you type Microsoft 20 times.  You should know better than that.

Yes, that is exactly what it means to me.  Otherwise, I might as well read the National Enquirer'.  Their stories are filled with information from anonymous sources.
