Looks like HD-DVD are getting ready to make a push leading up to xmas.

Venturer HD-DVD player

Cheap and cheerful HD-DVD player, people reckon it will be going to Wall-Mart.

Also if you're lucky enough to live in the US you can get a Toshiba A2 + 8 HD-DVDs for $210 from Amazon right now. (Currently the #1 Electronics item).

So what player did you go for?

Well I stumbled accross a used RCA Toshiba A1 clone on e-bay yesterday. Because of today's pending release of Heroes I decided 'what the hey' and bid on it. I ended up winning it late last night for 1.27 songs...and picked up Heroes today while it was on sale. I am keeping it wrapped up though, just in case the RCA arrives DOA.  It only needs to last a couple years until a decently priced combo unit becomes available and I can pick up those Pixar blu ray discs too.

Paramount Deal: Consumers Lose
Posted August 28, 2007 by Josh

If you are heading out to your local movie retailer today, keep an eye out for a Blu-ray copy of 'Blades of Glory' as a few copies have reportedly made it to store shelves. If you find a copy, you will have the opportunity to own a prime example of how the recent Paramount deal hasn't hurt just Blu-ray consumers, but all high definition consumers.

Meh. I don't know why I let people like you get to me so. I really ought to know better. In fact, I do. This'll be my last post on this.

A few copies? I must have seen several dozen at the various retailers I visited today (Future Shop, Archambault, Metro Video & HMV to be precise). I didn't buy it however, BoG, while fun, just doesn't strike me as being HD worthy... not for $37 CDN anyway.

This Josh character sounds like a real ASC style nutter...    THE SKY IS FALLING...THE SKY IS FALLING.

John,

The very next day Michael Bay posted a retraction of sorts.  In fact the night of the blowup he said he watched 300 on HD DVD and was blown away.  So the story you're talking about was nothing more than a knee-jerk reaction and is old news.

I'm not sure why it was ever a big deal anyway.  For years film buffs have dissed Bay left and right.  Now all of a sudden some want to treat him as one of film's greatest assets.

The first reaction is usually the honest one.  The funny thing is...he had that same feeling until he left the studio heads.  Hummm, I wonder what happened.  It seems to follow the same pattern as the Paramount decision to go HD DVD.

The major exclusive studio split is 5 to 2 in favor of Blu-ray.  Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Disney, MGM, and Lionsgate...vs...Universal and Paramount.  Some might try to argue that Lionsgate is not a major studio, but they are.

I like how in your world, MGM and Lionsgate are major studios but Dreamworks, The Weinstein Company and Dimension aren't. MGM is owned by Sony, its home video is run by Fox, it make a few co-productions per year with Sony, much the same as Dreamworks are now owned by Paramount but continue to make co productions with Paramount and various studios, but you still exclude them in your FACTS™.

Look it up at wikipedia.  The Weinstein Company is actually considered a mini-major as well (barely).  I was trying to help the HD DVD side out a bit so the news that's coming within the next few months won't seem like such a blow.  They have had very little impact in this HD format war.  They have released...what...11 or so titles so far?  Lionsgate has released at least twice that number on Blu-ray.

Dimension is definitely not a mini-major by any stretch of the imagination.  That would be like counting Screen Gems, Sony Pictures Classic, United Artist, Tri-Star, Miramax, Hollywood Pictures, etc.  You don't want that do you?

If you are talking about the Big Six from 2006 to now, Universal and Paramount together basically equal to Sony Pictures.

FACTS (2006...Universal doing much worse this year)):
Universal and Paramount together is 21.9%.
Sony Pictures is 21.1% market share.
Blu-ray Exclusive Market Share 58.4% (not including Starz Home Entertainment...formerly Anchor Bay)
HD DVD Exclusive Market Share 24.4%
---------
So, don't start to think things are anywhere near close on studio support.  I know that was the underline purpose of your post.  HD DVD would need to acquire EVERY other studio to be close in studio support for just about any given year.

Don't you find it bit strange that you keep saying I have no credibility, but you have NEVER proved me wrong on my facts about Blu-ray and HD DVD.  That is not the correct usage of the words by any definitions, yet, you continue to incorrectly use them.  I guess you live by the ruling of manipulation...say a lie enough times and it will become truth.  That's not noble at all.  You seem to be a very hateful person.

You don't provide any factual evidence to oppose what I say about these formats.  You almost always just attack me, personally, instead.  Does that scream logic?  Does that scream good character?  Does that tend to show that you are correct?  Of course, not, but you continue none the less.  You appear to be blinded by hate and the truth will never reach you in that state.

I gave facts to dispute your claim that Mitsubishi held a 2D to 3D Blu-ray demonstration.  Rather than admit you were wrong, you first tried to discredit me by making it seem like I was calling the reporters liars.  When that didn't work, you tried a bit of misdirection and pointed to the title of the article...as if that had anything to do with the original issue.  When I called you on that, you simply ignored it.

Does that scream logic?  Does that scream good character?  Does that tend to show that you are correct?  Of course, not, but you continue none the less.

Dude, you really need help.  The article is still there for all to see.  The title of that article (and many others about the same subject) has 4 key things in all of them...Blu-ray...Mitsubishi...3D...Demonstration (Demo).

No one needs to discredit you.  The stuff you spout sometimes screams "disconnected from reality".  You need to do something...call a hotline...get a doctor...click your heels 3 times...something!  I'm really starting to get worried about you...honestly.  Just tell me your just f'ing with me or something.

I read this article, they gave a 3D demonstration of stuff filmed in 3D.  They did not give a demonstration of a movie filmed in 2D, being converted by a mitsubishi hi-def player, into 3D.  They did mention in the article that "supposedly" mitsubishi is going to be offering a BD player that converts 2D movies into 3D, however, that is not what the demonstration showed!!!

Why is it that you are reading something completely different???

We have covered this already.  Go back to my last post on this.

I don't know who you think you're fooling.  You had already picked a favorite side via emotion (always the smart choice).   You just didn't get a player until now.

Do you and some others feel that way because I try to cook with facts?  I usually use facts so I know I can back it up with documents.  That I why I issued the challenge to anyone that think they can prove otherwise.  I don't feel like I'm superior to anyone (usually a sign that it is not a superiority complex).  So, if you get frustrated at the things I say, you must not be ready for the truth.  It could also mean you don't like me as the deliver of it.  No matter.  What ever will be will be.

No, you tired...quite badly I might add...to spin this.  Keep trying though...eventually you might get somone, other than yourself, to believe it.

The first reaction is usually the emotional one.  The second reaction is usually one based on thought.  I find it funny that you want to discount his second statement simply because it doesn't agree with your opinion.

Funny.  Remember, he had quite some time to reconsider before walking into the studio head's office for Paramount.  Yet, he didn't seem to "change his mind" 'til after he left that office.

Hey, pay me a few million dollars and I'll say HD DVD is the way to go, too!  I'll just go buy a very expensive film projector digital projector and watch movies that way...directly from the studios.  Would you trust that my "second reaction" was based on thought for anything but that money?

BTW, I own the LOST land of Atlantis.  I'll sell it to you for $10,000.  You interested?  There are untold riches on that land.  Come on.  Don't you believe it?

Nice try you sad, sad and oh so small man. You keep telling yourself whatever it takes to sleep at night, but trust me, knowing that I would be lining up on the opposite side from a wannabe fanboy like you definately played a role in my decision. I hope that you feel pride that you are actively continuing to aid the HD DVD cause with your ongoing antics.

(FYI if it turns out that you are secretly promoting HD DVD then let me be the first to say that you are one hell of a good company shill  )

Where is your link to the article that claims he had a meeting at the studio head's office for Paramount.  I read his statement and didn't see anything about that.

I should have read this paragraph first.  Had I done that I would have known that you were joking when you made the unsubstantiated claims you did in the first two.
