Just wondering what to do when a cast member is credited with so many roles that it doesn't fit in the role field?

Just fit in as many as possible and leave those that don't fit out, or create another entry and enter that right below the first set of roles and include those that didn't fit in the first one?

If he really is credited as e.g. "Tom Hanks as Santa Claus / Conductor / Hobo / etc."
I would open a second line directly below the other Tom Hanks entry.
But usually the credits in this cases run:
"Tom Hanks as Conductor"
Cast member
Cast member
"Tom Hanks as Santa Claus"
So there would be no problems there.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

ACK, this is according to the rules:

"Some actors may be credited a second time in either credits at either the opening or close of the film."

That doesn't address the problem referred to. Right now you will have to truncate that data...we don't have a large enough data field....hmmm that sounds familiar

This doesnot deasl with multiple CREDITS for one actor, it deals with a single listing with multiple roles.

I have no opinion on Goblins suggestion, except to say that is not how it would appear in that particular credit and thus technically against the Rules.

If we are mandated to emulate the credits exactly and are prohibited from doing so due to technical issues, anything that gets entered would technically be against the rules because it wouldn't be exact.  At that point, I think you do the best you can within the technical confines of the program.  In my opinion, capturing the data would trump the number of lines used.  That's just my opinion.

I recently did the credits for Cinderella II (don't you judge me!), each voice actor is credited only once, but some with the likes of six and seven names, separated onscreen by slashes. What I did was to add a second entry for the same actor right below the first, and stick in the last few role names that didn't fit in the first field. Of course I made a point of it in the contribution notes, but it went through just fine without any negative votes.

I thought the method described by midnitoil and nadja where the current practice. I believe I received several updates today which used that option... (although, it may have been that for each role a new row had been entered for those).

It is the current practice.  Yes, it is technically against the rules, but so is truncating the data.  You may be asking your self how truncating the data is against the rules, well, if it is truncated it isn't really 'as credited' now is it?

Maybe it's strange, but it's accurate.  If the data is truncated, it isn't exactly what's on the screen -- at least not completely.

What is strange about it? The rules mandate replicating the credits exactly. If the credits read "John Doe as Supercalifragislticexpialidocious", and someone enters that into the database as "John Doe: Supercali", how is that anything other than against the rules?

Just because the technology forbids us from following the rules doesn't make it right; at best it's simply the least bad option.
