Ummm....just thought I'd chime in and mention that early this morning I saw the Twister submission.  Figured the Wednesday was odd so I jumped onto Amazon for a quick check and it concurred.  I know early in the thread somebody mentioned a voter using Amazon as corroboration and it was me.  I was in a hurry.  In my defense, at least I bothered to check.

Oops.

I will say though, what I thought was more disconcerting was not that the new release date was off by 1 day, but rather the submission moved the currently accepted date by a number of months...at least for Twister.  It bothers me that a profile as old as the '97 release of Twister could still be screwed up more than 10 years after it's release.

I haven't bothered to read all the way through this thread, so just ignore me if this has already been beaten to death.

Really, a release date for a major release from as long ago as 1997 shouldn't be changed without ironclad evidence---and a couple of websites just doesn't cut it in any way, shape or form.

Yeah.  After finally reading all the way through the thread, I now see that the guy is simply out in left field.  Glad I got this stuff locked locally.

Twister was one of the 21 first day releases from Warner Brothers on 3/25/1997.

Well that's annoying.  Now I'm back to wondering just how our existing profile could be so far off.

Looks like Unicus was the first to push this profile back up after the great migration.  I blame him for this mess!

Checked out a couple of his changes. For Warner (Home Video) releases this site would seem to be reasonable to accept as accurate (it's the distributor's DVD shop). However, some of the titles are a rerelease, so not all original Warners release versions are listed (like Twister):

http://whv.warnerbros.com/WHVPORTAL/Portal/homepage.jsp

One of his changes, The Road Warrior, seems to be correct, and I noted the citation in my 'yes' vote.
The other, Under Siege, was incorrect. I gave the citation in my 'No' vote and the contribution has since been withdrawn.

The release dates on the site posted by nolesrule agree with the Warner Home Video site.

The contributor has replied to my PM, which is the community spirited way of addressing these issues as opposed to opening a thread in the forums.
I have copied it below as I feel it is not 'personal', but rather an indication of a new contributor believing he was helping the common database but getting it wrong, as we all have in the past.
He doesn't post on the forums.

"sorry i just assumed that movieweb.com and amazon.com both having the same identical release dates would have the correct date on file, i will not update anymore sorry... thought i was providing correct info. but some of the release dates i know for sure were wrong off by months instead of a few days, i know cause i actually owned the titles prior to what invelos had done for a release date. i will just update my own database than. sorry again"

he has started re-submitting after shifting the dates from the one listed at movieweb to the nearest Tuesday...while still listing movieweb as his source...so he is effectively lying.

I noticed the same thing ...

I wrote to him to ask him to PLEASE stop doing this.

Hopefully he will understand and stop ...

Mark

I had noticed that most of the contributions were citing the same source. It might be they were trying to just be helpful by changing the data based on the info they had, then looking for more data once "no" votes came in.

If they don't read the forums they would not know about this thread or that there is a lot of data that is incorrect out there.

Hopefully, now that Mark has sent him a message (thank you) he will be able to contribute data that is accurate.

Edit: Richierich posted at the same time! I thought that might have been what was happening. I still screw up plenty when contributing myself!

If nothing else, he's alerted us to the fact that some of these older profiles are messed up.  It's going to be a pain to fix some of them.

To clarify my position on this thread as I appear to have been seen to have supported the contributions or in some way be responsible for them.

My point was the rules do not state where to take the sources from, and what is a 'legitimate' source or not. I have on many many occasions seen the release dates in contribution notes quoted as being derived from dvdempire, amazon etc without anyone questioning them.

The rule needs to include something along the lines of "Please be aware release dates for region 1 USA are most commonly on a Tuesday", and some guide as to the voters expectations on acceptable sources. This will stop this situation occurring again.

For the record, I voted no to 3 of the submissions and PM'd the contributor, and he will now hopefully withdraw his incorrect contributions.

And to address the ridiculous comment I should stay out of region 1

Why? I own nearly 3000 dvds from the USA and Canada, regularly contribute and help develop and improve the profiles from this region in the common database, and only vote and comment on dvds I actually own. There should not be any regional discrimination on the forums, and to suggest such a thing is bo**ox, or rather I should say baloney?

The question I posed about strengthening the rule for the future can be utilised for all regions, eg UK releases common for Mondays as has already been noted.

I've said enough now - back to my film

I just PMed him about using copyrighted rear cover art as well. Hopefully he will pull those as well. He did pull all the date changes that were also in my collection... though I know there were many he did I don't have.

I thought that after the turmoil that he/she started the unnamed miscreant would come out of his hiding and explain to us why he/she acts this way.
But he/she obviously doesn't visit the forum, so maybe one of you R1 users who know the alias should send a PM with this thread linked. Just to hint him/her that something's wrong.

EDIT: OK, Pete had the same idea and did so. Great
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I didn't mention this thread to him in my PM... but I did provide him a link to the rules... just in case.

I did however give him the link to this thread in most of my no votes so it isn't like he didn't know he could come here.

tuesday is the day, but i'm sure that this year there have been at least 2 times that a release date was on friday, it seems that sometimes when there are 2 or more major movies to be released that week they will release one of them 3 days later,
