This is something that has sprung up from Beowulf so I wanted to get the opinions on motion capture performances such as in Beowulf and The Polar Express. Should voice be checked off for the cast credits? I personally don't know how to handle this because I can see why the voice should be checked off since there is indeed animation but, OTOH, the actor's actual performances are used...

What should be the standard be for something like this? If we can get a concenses now, maybe it can be something written into the rules at some point later.

I would definitely use (voice) as the actors themselves do not appear on screen.

I would not check the voicebox, as the actors' perfomances play a significant role in the movie.

I can see the other side of the coin though, and understand why some would have the voicebox checked...

If the whole cast is motion captured, adding voice to everyone would just seem like redundant info... And there might be some voice only parts, how would those be distinguished from the other performances?

Anyway, this isn't new... How did we handle Gollum?

It is all redundant info for completely animated movies... but we are still told to add it on them.

but... the way I see it atleast... this IS an animated movie... may be computer animations... but animated all the same... so the voice tick box should be used.

But this is more then motion captured actors... which may or may not also do voices. But about a movie that is totally animated (computer animated... but animated all the same)... and per rules animated movies you use the voice tick box.

so it is:

In addition to the above, the following rules should be followed:
For animated films or voice-only roles, use the "Voice" checkbox.

and there is no doubt this is an animated film

Beowulf isn't animated though. At least not according to the overview text on the back of the cover.

Yes, there is more than a "voice" here, there's a performance (in the case of Gollum, a great one by Andy Serkis).  With all the "mo-cap" films coming up there may be need for, er, another tiny rules revision.

Cameron's next film (Avatar) will undoubtedly contain any number of terrific performances...

but it is still (computer) animated... no matter what the back cover wants to call it... animated is animated. so even though motion captured can be... or may not be voice... I see no distinction in the rules to not use it for the animated movie as we are told. If the whole movie wasn't computer animated I would be of a different opinion on the matter.

I don't think the rule was designed to match motion captured actors so it doesn't fit. There were animated films where actors lend the characters their voices. Now there are a couple of movies where the characters consists of the motion captured acting (?) of one person and the voice of another person (eg "Renaissance"). Ticking the "voice" checkbox for both of them wouldn't be correct, you can't hear the voice of the motion captured actor.

It would be nice to have a "mocap" checkbox, but ticking the "voice" checkbox would be incorrect 'cause it is designed for the voice cast, not motion capturing.
