Ok, here is the situation: Today I corrected the credits for "Miami Vice: Unrated Director's Edition" (UPC 025193326621). One of the cast entries was the actor "Pasha D. Lychnikoff" which I corrected to "Pasha D. Lynchnikoff" as credited. Neither did I add a common name nor did I remove one.

One well know community member (no, not Skip ) immediately voted "No" for my contrbution with the comment "Unless you can prove the CLT wrong Pasha D. Lychnikoff is credited in 28 titles.Pasha D. Lynchnikoff only 7 titles. Use "credited as"." When I sent him a PM he confirmed his opinion.

So my question to the community is: Since when am I required to use common names ? Nowhere in the rules does it state that I have to look up every cast or crew member for a possible common name. I do use the credit lookup tool quite often but there is now way I'm acceptiong that I have to do this. What do you think ?

Michael

Point him at this Thread

As already stated there...CLT is not the be all and end all of the credits until the database is filled with 100% proved profiles, all the time some still contain either IMDb data (intentionally or not) CLT will not be that accurate.

Also i notice that the user provides CLT results but does not provide ANY proof that Lychikoff and Lynchikoff are the same...it looks like a simple typo correction to me.

you are correct TigiHof:
I just updated my profile: Miami Vice 5-050582-444056 (Netherlands) and
Miami Vice 5-050582-501308 (Netherlands)
did you catch the other one: Julia Yarbrough as Herself > Julia Yarbough lousy credits, had to use a magnifying glass.
Just found another one:
Elizabeth Rodriguez as Gina Calabrese > Gina Callabrese

It's not a requirement.
But I see this as a nice gesture to fellow users... because of your change, it will break the link between this movie and other movies with the same actor.

And someone will have to submit another change to fix yours... So why not do it correctly right away?

Also... You don't have to look up every cast & crew for common name... Just the ones that your are changing

Generally agreed, but in this case I think there is a typo spreading through the database which spoils the CLT.

EDIT: OMG!! No, I don't want to start a discussion about the quality of the CLT.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Have just submitted the changes for the R2UK profile 5050582453461
Although not a Unrated Director's Cut, it still had the same mistakes.

Don't I know it. Over here a national daily paper have been giving away some old WWII movies as a promotional gimmick (Yes I've been getting them, one way to increase the collection size, I get the paper anyway), to save time I found the relevant titles in the online with the intention of saving some time, only to find quite alot of the assigned cast / characters were way off.

I do know the ones that I noticed that where incorrect will have the right cast/charater listing for the promotional ID's.

Now if only we could get all DVD's correctly Actor assigned then perhaps the CLT might work the way its intended to.

I agree that this one... is a difficult one.
According to imdb, the guy has mostly as many credited names as movies.

CLT is a good tool when we're dealing with typos.  But in this case the information is just not reliable and we'll end up with the imdb name as a common name.

Edit:
He should a good candidate for a topic like this one to clean up the data and agree on a common name.
