Hi,

I hope someone can help clarify something for me. In one of my contributions for - 5050582522792 (Battlestar Galactica 1-3 + miniseries) - one of the comments is "Subtitles/audio tracks should not be included". I can't understand this as the info is correct. I'm new to this so am still learning the full ropes so am happy to resubmit it without this info if necessary. I have looked over the Contribution Rules & couldn't see anything in there that said why I shouldn't. If I have missed it, please can this be pointed out so I can know for future reference.

Thanks.

Maybe they're referring to the parent profile and thinking how the parent for a Box Sets should not include details like disc IDs, audio and video formats, etc.  If you've got something like the Indiana Jones box set you should not include audio data at the parent level, rather it should be included in the child profile for each title (Raiders of the Lost Ark, ...Temple of Doom, ...Last Crusade).

However, for TV series, the parent profile is supposed to contain all the information that's in the child profiles.  This was a compromise to satisfy two groups of users: one who do not want to deal with child profiles -- and want all the data available at the parent level; and another group who DO want to use child profiles and don't need the data available at the parent level.

Since BSG is a television series -- and assuming the audio data you included is correct, I don't see why anyone would say it shouldn't be included in the parent profile.

That was me, I'd been treating it as a boxset and had forgotten that the separate sets were also TV series.

I've changed my vote now since you are saying that the audio / subtitles are identical across all three different series and miniseries

Doesn't this fall under
Quote:
In rare cases where multiple Complete TV Series are packaged together, the Box-set rules can be applied, treating each series like a single film - applying the above rules for it’s individual profile.

True as long as it is more then one season/series it falls under this rule and the parent profile should be cleared as done in boxset rules.

Except the rule says "can be" not "should be", so it's still optional whether you follow boxset profile rules or not.

I assume it should be "should be". I can't imagine this was intended as a genuinely sanctioned ping-pong situation.

I think it was designed as a "get out of work" option.
If you didn't want to create a huge profile with cast and crew for all those episodes, this clause gave you the option to treat it as a boxset instead.
However if some mug.. I mean charitable person wants to start typing, who am I to stand in their way?

Actually, once the child profiles exist, a few simple copy and paste actions can be used to create the huge parent profile, by that same charitable person.

I fully agree and most comments I've seen (outside this thread!) agree that if it's multiple series/seasons then the parent is treated as a boxset parent not a 'TV series with all the data'.

I believe the 'can be' was put in as a cop out when something like "Dallas series 1 &2" is done where series 1 is short or almost pilot series and also you can get a mix of series 1 and 2 on a single disc, precluding the ability to separate them into separate child profiles.
It was also written when we couldn't have children of children so now we can there is less reason to use it this way.

When you get full series/seasons (especially if they are available separately and simply repackaged in a box) then I believe the parent should be treated as a box set parent and not have the information incuded.

One thing I hope we can all agree on is that the Rule  is ripe for updating as 'can be' is just asking for trouble.

I fully agree on "should be"! This 'Battlestar Galactaca' set should indeed be handled as a box set. That means that the parent profile indeed does not get audio tracks and subtitles (nor various other stuff that only belongs in the child profiles).

The parent profile in this case "should be" handled as a Boxset since this release contains multiple seasons.

I don't even like using the phrase "should be".  The Rule should be changed from "can be" to "will be".

Thanks for all the responses.

As this is a grey area at the moment. I have withdrawn the contribution until the rule is clarified one way or the other.
