This is only a F.Y.I. item not stating anything done intently.  Did not see anyway to contact directly.
Went to download Bulk Edit, my virus program (Avast Home) would not let me download Bulk Edit.
It found a Malware Win32-Trogan Virus Worm.
Checked all others at the sit found no other virus.

This is a strange post. If you suspected this to be true, why wouldn't you PM the author (me) before putting out a public  "FYI"? And why would you make a separate thread instead of using the already available BulkEdit thread? Giving you benefit of the doubt, I will look into it, but I have two different well-known anti-virus programs running on all my machines, as well as Ad-Aware SE Plus.

Now in order to research this, you need to provide me with all detailed error messages from your software. This can be via PM, but if you prefer to continue to spread unsubstantiated rumors publically, be my guest.
Thanks for your support.

Ok, got the PM. So far, my own research shows that ONLY AVAST reports this so-called "virus". ANd guess what you have to do to fix it? You guessed it - buy the registered version. Hmmm ....

I have also found a couple of Blogs and Forums with questions raised about Avast and examples of lawsuits being taken on the basis of faslse reporting or "false positives" known to be a distinquishing feature of some scanners ...

Still giving the beneift of the doubt, running both Symantec and Ad-Aware SE Plus on my development machine now and will report results.

Here is an example quote from the many forums I have found where people have been discussing the false posstives given by AVAST:

"If Avast has been informed of the problem, then they should fix it in a few days. I recently got a false positve for a game executable, even directly from the CD. I went to their forum, registered and found a thread that discussed the problem. Sure enough, I was not alone and as expected, the next definition file fixed the problem. Avast don't seem to be one of those that deliberatly give false positives for commercial purposes, besides it's free. "

Now so far, I have spent maybe 10 minutes researching this. I wish the original poster had done this amount of responsible research before making a public post - kind of like yelling "fire" in a crowded theater.
Thanks for your support.

Hi Guys

If you (or any other developers) are concerned about false positives upload your executables to VirusTotal it will scan the file with many of the AV products on the market and gives a good indication if something is amiss.

I'm running Avast the free version and download the plugin a week ago and DID NOT get a virus warning, I re-downloaded it today and still NO virus.....and yes my program is up to date.

Next time you have an aleart, upload the "infected" file to virustotal.com. It checks the file with 36 scanners.

Well I prefer to have one good one. Sending it to 36 possibly inferior scanners virtually ensures you get multiple hits. But there are a couple of companies that have bet their entire reputations and probably millions of dollars on getting it right. I use those.

I think the point is not to use that site to check for viruses, but nearly to make yourself aware whcih programs may report false positives on your software (that's why ritchf directed his post mainly at developers!). It is known there is no single perfect virus scanner (some may get to 95% or even a little bit more, but none is 100%), so making yourself aware which may give false positives is helping you to answer this kind of threads.

After all, false positives are not necessirily an entirely bad thing, at least it's better than missing out on a real one...

I hate to say it but my Dad runs that same app with auto-updates in place and so far, I've had to reformat his machine twice due to adware....
