We've made a change to our forum posting requirements - non-paid accounts may now read posts in any of the public forums but may post only into the newly created "New Users" forum.

This will facilitate giving our forum moderators the ability to effectively handle users who continually violate rules and/or promote discord.

Please note that the New Users forum is not for general discussion.  Any disruptive or off-topic posts there will be removed without warning.

Thanks Ken. I know that you said you weren't sure that you wanted to do this so I hope that it works.

Ken, please elaborate. To me it sounds like users with non-paid accounts are made responsible for promoting discord (which I do not see that way).

And also how will this help forum moderators to handle such users?

Prior to this change, permanent bans were not possible as banned users could simply create a new account.

I feel like you've pulled two eggs out of the fridge and told us you're baking a cake.  It's a fantastic start, but we're still a long from sinking our fork into anything.

The pie we were promised (self-moderation with green/red arrows) never arrived.  And the cheesecake (forum moderators) never tasted quite right.

Food analogies aside , I hope we're on the right path now and will see it through to the end.

A fair number of new users seem to start in the tech support forum, are they locked out of this area too?  It might be unwise to deny support to a trial user, as solving an installation/use issue may determine if a sale happens...

My understanding is that any questions that unpaid users have can be put into the new section regardless of where they would normally go.

I agree, at least "tech support" should be open to all users.

TBH, i've only seen people create new accounts a few times. Rules are great, but without enforcing them, they arent going to be of much use. No matter how many restrictions you put in place, the ones losing are not the ones that created the problem.

A good example is banning political discussion, can anyone honestly say it did any actual change to the atmosphere?

Yes....it removed one more area for argument.

And in my case, one of the major points of interest to visit the General discussion forum: the ability to exchange POVs with people from all over the world I regularly got in contact with regarding subjects of general interest and not focused on the software for DVD collecting...

On topic:

I'm curious to see if this new course of action will effectively remove the users that are continously creating a hostile atmospehere in these forums...

Thats how they create police states. One restriction at a time. Punishing everyone for the wrong doings of few is never a good idea in my books.

But to equate this with a police state is wrong.  This is  a forum for the users and betterment of DVD Profiler.  It states this in the forum rules.

Ken, as the author and owner has the right to establish and reevaluate the rules and guidelines as he sees necessary.

I think the statement of moving to a police state is unwarranted and unnecessary.  WE do have options.  We stay because we want to not because we have to.
