Greetings!

I'm exhausted.  I have a collection of movies on my media server, about 3,000 of them in total, and I simply can't keep up with the collection.

I'm looking for a solution to help manage my collection.  Ideally I'd like the following:

  • Option to have the program scan the current drive and create a catalog.  Catalog ideally would be sortable/searchable by actor, rating, genre, maybe other items.  Those are the big 3, though.

  • Option to help re-name the titles so they match IMDB naming conventions. (This would need to be able to handle both the filename and the meta data name, if possible.)

  • Ability to search and reference the catalog, once created, from my smartphone both on and off the home network.

  • Some way for it to look for new files when I buy new dvd's.

  • I'm so exhausted, I got through about 1/2 my catalog in AllMyMovies before I found out that the darn android app is inoperable and that's a deal killer for me.

Can anyone advise as to these items before I make a purchase?  I don't mind spending money on development I just need something that works.

    Thanks in advance

Are you asking if DVDProfiler can perform these functions or are you asking for someone to code a program for you?

All of it.  Profiler only catalogs physical media that has a unique identifier...UPC, EAN, disc ID, etc.  It does not handle digital media files stored on a hard drive.

Well poo, I thought I read that it did.  My bad, thanks for the heads up.

I know you all love this program, it appears to be a good one, but does anyone know if a solution that at least partially help me?  Most of my collection is in files stored on a hard drive but I have 500 or so physical disks, too.  Simply a catalog that works that I can use from my phone is honestly the bare bones of what I need...

Well, that Profiler can do, you just have to add all your titles manually which, based on your original post, you don't want to do.

Hmm interesting.  I think I need to research this more.  I'm maybe thinking that it wouldn't be so bad adding them once as long as everything else worked - such as searching by genre etc.  The big thing is when I'm in my living room with the theater turned on I don't want to have to go to my office to figure out what movie to watch.  I should be able to peruse my catalog from the phone.

The re-naming is not essential either, as I can do it all by hand if needed it'll just take a while.  Even 100 per night is near a month of nonstop editing.

    Choices, choices.

I have some code in development that needs further testing. If you are interested in trying some prototype code, send me a PM.

You may want to check out Plex or Kodi (google them). I believe they are more in line with what you're looking for.

Hello there...  I don't know if I am fully answering your questions or requests, but I thought I would give it a try...

Sorry, DVDProfiler is not currently capable of scanning the hard drive for media files.  Unless a really smart coder like mediadogg or DJ Doena has figured out a way to create a Plugin to scan your media server's hard drive.

One thought that I had was for you to create a new custom collection, call it "Media Server" for example, and then add the Media File entries to that collection manually using "Add by Title".  For those titles that have multiple entries, you would just have to Preview and decide which title fits your needs best.

Since you have physical media (DVDs or Blu-rays) too, you can manually "Add by UPC" the physical disks into your default "Owned" collection.

A lot of initial manual upfront work by loading in the titles for the two collections, but I think this would get you the cataloging for searching and sorting that you are wanting.

I'm not sure I understand this request, and hope that this would not be necessary.  Yes, you could rename Titles in DVDProfiler, but you may have to lock those changed profiles and not share the changes back up to the DVDProfiler central database.

Yes, once you have begun to create the collections, you should be able to use the DVDProfiler for iOS or Android to transfer the data from your PC to your smartphone device using your home Wi-Fi network.    Once on your mobile device, you will be able to view and search the "Owned" (physical discs) and "Media Server" collections separately.
