I need some help from the experts. Which is the correct name of Clint Eastwood's studio:
a) The Malpaso Company
or b) Malpaso Company
The opening credits of his movies say "A Malapso Company Production" and the copyrights in the opening credits say "The Malpaso Company".
My opinion is "The Malpaso Company". But some guys take the view that the copyrights are too small and therefore invalid and only the bigger signs at the beginnings are valid.

Quotation: opening credits are in big letters "A Malpaso Company Film" and a copyright is not a Studio credit

Utter nonsense or not? Not valid because the copyright is too small? By the way, the bigger signs say "Universal" and not "Universal Pictures" as credited in the copyright.

The rules tell us not to abbreviate studio names (hence Universal Pictures rather than Universal), so I'm inclined to agree with you.

I agree.  This has always been my opinion.

Malpaso Company

Malpaso

Malpaso Productions

but not The Malpaso Company.

Even the business license is Malpaso Company or Malpaso Productions.

The Malpaso Company, now Malpaso Productions

official company letterhead (The Mapaso Company) document from 1977 signed by Clint

>>>The rules tell us not to abbreviate studio names<<<

EMI Films, not Electric and Musical Industries Ltd. Films
BBC Films, not British Broadcasting Corporation Films
RKO Radio Pictures, not Radio Keith Orpheum Pictures
ABC Pictures, not American Broadcasting Company Pictures
always Warner Bros., never Warner Brothers
Producers Releasing Corporation and PRC are both correct (films were released using both variants)
etc.

Well it would look funny saying A The Malpaso Company Production wouldn't it. Use the name from the copyright.

No, not because it is too small, but because it often is not the studio, distributor or production company (although it can be)

...as you may, or may not know....

The copyright holder name can be...

a studio/distributor
a production company
both a studio and a production company
a parent/controlling company
bankers/financing
a name made up for a specific film (sometimes named after the film itself), never to be used again
the name of an individual

as welll  from wiki -  " The name is derived from Malpaso Creek (Spanish for "bad step", or "bad crossing"), located south of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, where Eastwood has spent much of his life. The creek has very steep side slopes and had only one crossing (a ford only 10 feet above sea level) until 1935, when a concrete bridge was constructed for State Highway 1. When Eastwood agreed to take the role of the Man with No Name, his agent told him that it would be a "bad step" for his career. After the Dollars Trilogy made it big and Eastwood decided to run his own production company, he thought "Malpaso" would be an appropriately ironic choice. ' "

Thanks for your feedback. But there is a great misunderstanding. I don't wanna take the studios from the copyright (maybe it's invalid for various reasons), i only want to take the CORRECT NAME of the studios from the copyright. And in this case i can't understand why this should be invalid. The opening credits of this movie say "Universal presents" and the endcredits say "A Universal/Malpaso Production", only the copyright tells us the correct name per rules : "Universal Pictures". But it's forbidden to take the correct name of Eastwood's studio from the copyright because it's no valid source? Sorry, this makes no sense to me.

IMO studios should be handled the same way as actors.

I don't care about their "real" name, I track the way they are mentioned in the credits (In this case the part where it says "A XYZ production").
Means:
"Malpaso Company" and not "The Malpaso Company"
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

That's why you're able to have a local database that's completely independent of the online database.

Eastwood's company was called The Malpaso Company (not Malpaso Company). It is now called Malpaso Productions. Similarly it is The Ladd Company (never Ladd Company)....The Archers (never Archers), etc.

What some may enter in their local database is their concern (or what others enter into the online for that matter).....but you asked for the correct name of Eastwood's company....and tha is..formerly The Malpaso Company, currently Malpaso Productions

Generally....can't be done. Sure, some films are copyrighted Universal Pictures or The Malpaso Company (same as the releasing, production companies). But as I said in my earlier post this is often not the case.

Take Eastwood's Gran Torino (2008) : distributor/ production companies - Warner Bros. and The Malpaso Company, copyright: Matten Productions GmbH & Co. KG

Take the 1972 Concert film Concert for Bangladesh....production company: Apple Films....not sure who the current copyright holder is (I have the DVD but haven't watched it in awhile), but the original copyright holder was UNICEF, this because Harrison assigned the copyright to them.

I watch a lot of independent cinema and most of the copyright holder names I see on these films bear no resemblence to the production companies/distributors. Some are copyrighted to the writer-director-producer. Some are made-up names (eg : name of film The Other Weekend.....copyright 2004 The Other Weekend Film, LLC or some such).
So getting "the correct name of the studio from the copyright" is not always possible, nor is it needed as the correct (or at the very least, one can gather the most common-often-credited variant) production company name should be there in the on screen credits.

Exactly.

The Malpaso Company presents
A Malpaso Company production....same difference.

Some of the actual on-screen credits used by Universal Pictures

Universal
Universal Pictures
It's a Universal Picture
Universal Pictures Corporation
Universal Picture Corporation
universal studios
Universal City Studios
Universal MCA
Universal Company
The New Universal
Universal Pictures Company Inc.
Universal Productions inc.
Universal Thrill
A Universal Production

You have two choices: enter each film into your local and/or online exactly as credited on a film by film basis (and from what I've seen of the online db, just about every possible variant is entered there), or (what I do) ignore the database and enter them all in your local as Universal Pictures (what I do).

The choice is yours.

Some on-screen credits used by The Malpaso Company/Malpaso Productions

The Malpaso Company
A Malpaso Company Film
A Malpaso Company Production
Malpaso Productions
Malpaso
A Malpaso Production
