Also, Bridge to Terabithia (786936733624) reports both commentary tracks as Stereo.

Program confirms 2.0 stereo.

Yep, but we should continue to keep an eye on how it behaves. There might be surprises along the way...

yeh, just found it today

But it sure is a great help, tells you exactly which tracks are plain stereo, mono or surround

And I discovered that I was often right on the Surround but also often wrong about it

With Commentary tracks I am on 50/50 so far, but now I shall watch a movie and continue contributing the Surround tracks tomorrow

Hooray. This is exactly what I wanted. Does it also distinguish 5.1 EX from regular 5.1?

A bit on - and a bit off - topic, but does anyone know something I can download to distinguish between Dolby 2.0 Stereo and Dolby 2.0 Mono for DVDs?  I've run into occasions where the package says Dolby Digital Mono but Power DVD says Dolby Digital 2.0.  Previously I thought that meant Stereo or Surround and that the package was incorrect, but have recently learned of this animal Mono 2.0, but I'm not sure that Power DVD will report this difference.

So, any ideas?

The easiest way to check this is play the disc in Pro-logic mode and see if it all collapses to the center, but I know DVD Beaver has something that does actual waveform comparisons.

Unfortunately there is no way to easily tell the difference between 2.0 stereo and 2.0 mono, software-wise anyway.
Programs like PowerDVD don't care about stereo or mono, all they know is that there are 2 channels of audio.
If you have an amp that shows audio levels, that will help as with a mono track the 2 meters will be perfectly matched whereas a stereo track should fluctuate.
For a foolproof way you are looking at more advanced audio software as you need to check the phase of the 2 channels and see if they cancel each other out (mono) or not (stereo).

Of course I haven't worked with audio for a while, so that could be complete bollocks.

replying to northbloke:

amp?  I have a TV, a DVD player and a cable with red, white and yellow ends.
I can play DVDs well enough on my computer to check credits, but not to watch the movie.  It plays in starts and stops.

replying to Ace:

What is ProLogic mode?  And how do I enable it?

replying to DarklyNoon:

Thanks!  Will have to look into that.
