Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the "front cover rule" was established to halt the arguments between those that wanted and didn't want to include quotes "" and possessives in the DVD Title based on the title in the on-screen credits.

I think the main argument for the "Title from the Cover" Rule change was that several people argued that this is "DVD Profiler" and not "Movie Profiler" therefore the title should come from the DVD cover and not the opening credits of the movie.

There were already numerous exceptions in the Rules to cover foreign films, TV series and "What More about Mary" type films, but apparently those exceptions were not enough to satisfy the DVD Cover crowd.

So now we're stuck with the likes of 'Batman', 'Pi', 'Star Wars' (all episodes), 'Simone', 'Batteries Not Included', 'And God Created Woman', 'Alien vs Predator', 'K-19: Widowmaker', 'Men in Black II', 'Mission: Impossible II', 'Mission: Impossible: III', etc, etc.

I would not exactly call this a "rare" occurrence.

If Ken wishes to weigh in he will. I do wish you would stop talking aabout common sense because you vision of common sense is certainly in line with my vision of common sense, which in turn is probably not the same as other users. Your vision of common sense, in fact, to me makes no sense at all.

Why is this another endless and pointless debate?

Ken & Gerri did indeed weight in their opinion...

As you might expect, voting was split: 4 yes and 5 no.

The change was declined.

The change, which was correct per the rules, was declined... End of story.

My opinion on all of this is - All titles should be taken from the credit block on the rear of Jacket , Period.
This is the area that is not an art field full of graphics and speculation. The title between quotes are the one true area to read and is easy to find and to read, and to decipher.
Therefore we wouldn't be having this same discussion month after month after month... after month..

I agree with widescreen, except "all titles" is dangerous ground, there will always be exceptions.

I personally don't know of what kind of exceptions there will be... but I do know that saying the title within the quotes in the credit block isn't a way to phrase it... as I personally have many cases that the title in the credit block is not in quotes at all.

Many, many DVDs do not include this "credit block".

On the other hand, almost all packages have a spine (envelopes excepted), and from a quick scan I can't find any that doesn't have a title. Just a suggestion...

No credit block.. then rear jacket, no rear jacket --  Spine,,  no spine - front jacket, questionable front jacket - opening credits on screen..

I just remembered that my DVD of  E.T. The Extra Terrestrial  (2 disc limited collectors ed.)  doesn't have a spine.., and for that matter it also doesn't have a UPC code.., A quick check on line here at Invelos reveals UPC for this version in a number of versions., But my own personal notes/records show me that I bought this through Future Shop , and I think the stickered UPC was on the shrink wrap, but I know I have always been disappointed that this box set of two movies (2002/1982)  is displayed on my shelf between other dvd's and  it doesnt have a spine.      But it does have a Credit block on the rear .

credit block is not always the title on the DVD Box.
Title field = Title of the dvdbox
Original Title= Titlescreen of the movie
