How long ago was it that Ken said that he was working on a new linking system for cast/crew? Nothing but crickets on that since.
Regarding Netflix and the like same here. But that is not the general population in the western world. Retail chains focusing on CD and DVD sales have gone bust, some department stores have removed their CD/DVD stalls and so on. Sales have simply plummeted. Outside the internet, here in the Netherlands only MediaMarkt remains as a main retail chain selling BRs, DVDs and CDs. Which is reflected in higher prices -- consequently doesn't help DVD popularity. Don't want to be too pedantric but, with your posting volume etc, doesn't the mantra of this site is: "it's a user contributed online db, so contribute if you're missing something." (no offence intended) Agree with the remarks on cast and crew. But any redesign is IMHO a) likely to end op much like IMdb (even if details differ it may cause legal issues) b) probably a good start to refocus into a "DVD&MovieProfiler which c) is a lot of work on the lower levels of the programs (PC, Android, iOS) and the online db. With, as I assumed, lower revenues, will Ken have the will and the time to do such an overhaul? | | | Eric

Use File / Create Profile File to create a profile file from the selected profile. Then the recipient just has to open that file, and Profiler will use it either to add that profile, or - if it is an existing profile - to update the existing profile from it (with the same update page as if you downloaded it from the online). Aha! That's the one I was trying to remember in a previous post! Yeah, I guess in theory it could be possible to create an online database of such profile files, if Invelos shuts down it's servers. In practice I think it would be too little to late. There would be too few interested users to build anything like a useful database. And of course it wouldn't provide anything like the features of Invelos' database anyway. | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

Perhaps instead of profile by profile, what about just sharing manual profiles for movies/tv series seasons. That way we'd have to share just one profile for a movie such as Jurassic Park instead of dozens of profiles for the same movie. |

Sure, that could be done, but ... If Invelos servers were gone, then Invelos rules would be gone, too. And if the rules were gone, I for one would just copy cast and crew from IMDb. It may not be perfect, but good enough for me. And I'm sure a lot of other users would feel the same. Not sure that there would be enough users that care that deeply about getting cast and crew exactly as credited that there would be sufficient demand for a cast-and-crew profile collection. | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Even more so that a change of a common name can destroy a precisely audited profile. Imagine Jane Doe was credited as Jane Doe in A Wonderful Movie but a few years later she marries John Smith and takes his last name. At some point her common name becomes Jane Smith. As long as she was Jane Doe, it was absoluetely impossible to credit her as Jane Doe [Jane Doe]. The program would simply clear out any identical "Credited As" name. But if you change her common name to Jane Smith, she's suddenly credited as Jane Smith in A Wonderful Movie instead of Jane Smith [Jane Doe]. With backups and restores of wildly different sources and without the aide of the offline-online profile compare screen that you get when you do an update from the online database, you're bound to make your database worse instead of better. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

| Posted: | | | | Well, after looking at the posts here it appears that there won't be a future of the community if Invelos closes down for good. It was worth a shot.
(I think it's a good thing for people to download a copy of the program and the OnlineList.dod file to ensure that one can continue to use the program.) Perhaps even your registration key too. Who knows what could happen in the future? Hard drive crash, buying a new computer, put the program on another computer. It sure wouldn't hurt. |

You're talking about database restore. I don't think that backup/restore would be a viable way of sharing profiles anyway. However, with profile files you get the same control as you do when you download an updated profile from Invelos. That said, I'm still not very optimistic about the idea. | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

These things should be done as a matter of "good housekeeping," regardless of what happens to Invelos. And the same strategy should be used for any other program or data that is important to you. It's still unclear to me when a non-birthyear actor gets merged with a birthyear actor. The major cases: a) you download a cast crew member, which is included in the exact same version (first/middle/last/BY) in your database: nothing happens. b) you download a BY assigned cast/crew member that is not already present in your cast/crew list: all profiles which are listing the same name without a BY get the new BY assigned. c) you download a profile with a cast/crew member, which has no BY attached, your local database misses this first/middle/last/noBY combination AND your database includes the downloaded name with a BY assigned: the existing BY is assigned to the downloaded profile!! I don't know exactly, what happens, if the first/middle/last assignment is broken, but this affects the BY algorithm too...
