When entering letters in the search field, the program could just disregard the accents and it would find the name whether you put in the accent or not. I'm sure Ken would agree that this is absolutely doable.

| Posted: | | | | Possible Source Suggestions: 1. Use IMDB as the source. Yes! 2. Use IMDB as a guide, allowing for debates on these forums on particular actors. Yes! 3. Actor's own website Very helpful in case of doubt. 4. Screen Caps/Time Stamps May come in handy sometimes, but not too often.
General Rules (not a source): 1. No accents Don't agree. 2. Double quotes for nicknames in the middle name field Agreed. 3. no commas after suffixes Agreed. 4. periods after all suffixes Agreed. 5. Middle initial should have a period after it. Agreed. 6. Comma after the surname when there is a suffix Don't agree. | | | Last edited: by T!M |

1. Use IMDB as the source. OK 2. Use IMDB as a guide, allowing for debates on these forums on particular actors. OK 3. Actor's own website OK 4. Screen Caps/Time Stamps no opinion
General Rules (not a source): 1. No accents I would like to see accents, probably because I'm familiar with using them, being European (allbeit English) 2. Double quotes for nicknames in the middle name field OK 3. no commas after suffixes OK 4. full stops after all suffixes OK 5. Middle initial should have a full stop after it. Agreed. 6. With the argument of ease of entry, we could as well skip all punctuation (no commas, no quotes etc. solving the ", Jr." vs " Jr" problem), use all small caps (no question if it's "de Bond" or "De Bond"), skip all spaces (no question if it's "DeNiro" or "De Niro"), and put everything into the first name field (solves the Bonham Carter problem) and we still would get a valid common name. I don't like this idea. Therefore I'm all for also using accents even if some English speaking users may not be used to deal with them. | | | Last edited: by RHo |

I've got the same problem as you. It works fine in my database but it looks like this in the contribution window:
T. Samoilova [T. Samoilova] A. Batalov [A. Batalov] V. Merkuryev [V. Merkuryev]
As you can see, same name in bouth of the fields. But the names in my database are "Tatyana Samojlova", "Aleksey Batalov" and "Vasili Merkuryev" and the "credited as" feature works just fine. Glad to know it isn't just me. If anyone has a clue about what to do about this, please let us know. |

| Posted: | | | | Here's the thing - we cannot move any further until we get word from Invelos that using iMDB as a starting point for master names is okay.
Until we hear from them, we're more or less at a standstill.
Also, throw my name into the hat of the "We must use accents" camp. If we're striving for accuracy, they have to be used - after all, it's part of a person's name, and affects pronouncation. | | | "I am Andrew Ryan and I am here to ask you a question: Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his own brow?
No, says the man in Washington. It belongs to the poor. No, says the man in the Vatican. It belongs to God. No, says the man in Moscow. It belongs to everyone.

Skip Understandable...but that's something Rho would need to fix. If the program supports it, we can't be concerned about whether or not a third party featuresupports it...that'd be like Microsoft not releasing Vista because third-party developers haven't decided to support it yet. | | | "I am Andrew Ryan and I am here to ask you a question: Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his own brow?

All I have suggested is to not drop the accents from people's names. I do favour Unicode support and accent tolerant search of course. But this has hardly anything to do with a common name rule, we are trying to find here. |

Unless Invelos see a potential legal issue with IMDb, it would be daft to try and use anything else imo - it is the biggest source of info, and best known on the web. Its also got the most inaccuracies of any DB on the web, but I guess nobody gives a damn about that. | | | John

I am sure that is an exagaration, and certainly can't be proved... but ultimately in this context it is irrelevant. As Hal (and others) have being saying throughout this thread this is just a key to link together credited names - it will not be seen in the profiles. All that is needed is an easy to source common name for all cast/crew - I know of no better source. | | | Andy
