AFI must still be mad at Mel Gibson..,  I don't see no Braveheart on the List and it won 5 awards that night.,, Life is Beautiful with Roberto Benigni from '97  should have at least taken the spot in the list such as.......  um... Nashville ( I hated that film)....
In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

That's the problem with an American-only list.

That could also be the reason for Braveheart missing. Scottish setting, Aussie director; just doesnt scream American!

Goodfellas is on the list, #92!!!

You nailed it with Braveheart, AFI must not be happy with him because I would definitely throw Braveheart up there!!!  I would also put Alien and The Excorcist on these top 100 lists!!!

What I said before about Braveheart sort of counts for Alien and The Exorcist. The AFI list is specifically best American film, and I read that as having an American theme as well as being made in the US. Alien was directed by a Brit, designed by a German (was Giger German, I can't remember now!) and set on a spaceship. Not much of America left in there. The Exorcist is a story that could have happened anywhere.

That's why on Kathy's other thread about what non-American films would you pick, I chose a list of British films that are purely British in theme, to try and match.

Thanks Kahless.

Just based on the top 10:
1 CITIZEN KANE
2 THE GODFATHER
3 CASABLANCA
4 RAGING BULL
5 SINGIN' IN THE RAIN
6 GONE WITH THE WIND
7 LAWRENCE OF ARABIA
8 SCHINDLER'S LIST
9 VERTIGO
10 THE WIZARD OF OZ

There are 3, that I know of, not set in America, or at least not completely, and do not have an American theme, so the premise that Braveheart was left off because of that cannot be right.

As to what is missing, I haven't looked at the whole list yet!

How the heck did Lawrence of Arabia get on that list? Schindlers I think is right; the Holocaust affected every country, but this was directed by an American who is also Jewish. It's American in style and a very personal film for one of America's top filmmakers. And The Wizard of Oz? It's a perfect American musical.

But I confess, I'm not even trying to link Lawrence of Arabia, because that's very British. Therefore you are correct about Braveheart. It must have been left off because it's rubbish! Ok, it's far from rubbish, but it does rather sledge-hammer the point home, playing fast and loose with facts, via an Australian trying to impersonate a Scotsman.

I presume The Wizard of Oz is the one not "at least not completely" set in America.  Even though they're "not in Kansas anymore" the film is very American.
