What's 1+1-1*0?

Out of dozens of people online I asked a couple years back, the vast majority said zero.  That is wrong.  The correct answer is 2.  When they realize they forgot the Orders of Execution, they tended to face-palm.

If the total cost is $844.90 including tax then your answer is $797.08 with a tax of $47.82 already having been added to give you the total of $844.90.

If the total is 844.90 plus tax then your answer is $895.89 with a tax of 50.69 being added to the $844.90.

Try telling that to Blockbuster - when I went for a job interview there once, they gave me a math test, and one of them was something like: £3.50 - £1.29 x 2
Well I was told I'd got it wrong because they'd got the answer by subtracting 1.29 from 3.50, then doubling it!

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally is a mnemonic to remember the order of execution.  Parentheses, exponent, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction.........in that order.

My favorite math question from when I was a kid in the stone age., er scratch that, Rock&roll age., was the scenario:

Three men want to rent a conference room for the afternoon at the Holiday INN, they are quoted $30.00..,
So they each pay $10 bucks each and proceed to set up their charts and graphs.. few minutes later a knock on the door and the bellman is there apologising to say that the front desk made a mistake and the room is only $25.00..
Bellhop hands over 5 single ones., in which he receives a two dollar tip.
First man hands back a buck each to the other two, and says" That's not bad,, Room  only cost us $9 dollars each" , in which the other two men said "but that's $27.00 and the two dollar tip, What happened to the missing dollar????

They are adding the tip twice. There is no missing dollar. The charge was $25 and they gave the man a $2 tip which is $27. The $27 added to the three they kept make $30.

the room was 25 and they tipped him 2.  making the total for the room 27.  there is no missing dollar.

I wonder if order of execution in math is used in finances/accounting.  Try 1+1-1*0 with windows calculator in Standard mode and then again in scientific mode.  You'll see what happens.
