I see your point about make-up. On this title there would be a lot of different make-up artist being put into one role if we were to enter everybody with credited with make-up. The ones I would have liked to be credited is the ones in the opening credits, but I guess it's too hard to define that in the rules.

I still don't want open credits though, as I like the opportunity to get statistics for directors and other roles. That would be lost with open credits

And I still like an option for created by and theme music. Those shouldn't be hard to define.

Well, that is just one film. You have to remember that almost every film lists these job titles differently. Some only slightly different but in a few films the titles are not even close to the same as these.

Not to mention what they're all called in non-Region 1 films!

Or in non-English language Region 1 DVDs.

Of my ~1900 DVDs, almost all of which are R1 releases, about a third are films in languages other than English. I think that pure open crew would be a nightmare for my collection.

pdf

You are seeing this the wrong way.

Thee current system causes a great deal of shoe horning and lengthy arguments due to the vagueness of the Hollywood credits. With open credits in DVD Priofiler, you simply type in what you see on screen. It would work the same way the cast list does. These credits would be divided into categories just as we have now but rather than constantly arguing over who did what and what they are called (as we do now) they would go in the appropriate category and type in the job title as you see it on the screen. So, directors still show up as directors and editors still show up as editors.

Open credits makes it a great deal easier for everybody by removing all the work-around rigging and shoe-horning we have now. It also puts an end to the arguments.

This is model making for stop motion animation. Today it would be done with computer graphics. We have no way to list it today.

With open crew, where would you list it? Art?

Read more carefully, Paul' Since this about possible expansion. He is asking how this could possibly be shoehorned into the CURRENT system, assuming expansion..

In a perfect world... (cue the sappy music, unicorns, and women who actually like me)...

We could have an open credit system for crew -- for the main online database.

But make actual program crew (and cast as well) a "personal" option like sort title is now.

That way you would get the best of both worlds, IMO. You would have one profile online that everyone can access, which has all the information. But you would - in your local DB - be able to do whatever in the heck you want with it, and upload it to your online collection.

As it stands now, our online collections mimic our local collections, except for cover images as long as things are locked. If you had a "Common Profile" for a movie, you could download it to your computer, make whatever changes you wanted, lock that field, then upload it to your online collection. Users would see your changes in your collection, but it in no way would affect then main database.

See? Isn't that simple?

That is reasonable. Here is the image that it brings to mind. Imagine checkboxes to determine precisely what you want to accept, now imagine those same checkboxes with LOTR complete crew.

The problem I have with it as you describe it is that it defeats the prpose of the online Database and data sharing. While I could see your crew data listings, if ou had, not so much for one piece, but multiple pieces to bring them to me would be problematic and time-consuming.

As I said I have worked on this particular issue myself for three years now, I have looked at what you describe, I have looked at the checkbox concept and several other possible options and there just isn't a real good answer, that won't either bring us more ummmmm debate or vorious other issues. Even the completely open crew listing brings it own share of challenges.

You are right Skip, this is a makeup/prosthetics credit, so it does not fit anywhere.

I do NOT want open credits.  That is like opening Pandora's Box.

However, there are some noticieable gaps in the Crew list that ought to be fixed.  Costumes, Special Effects, and Makeup most notably.

There are a great many movies that could not have even been produced without Baker's creature makeup, or ILM's special effects.  And how many hundreds of movies would have been mediocre or less without Edith Head's costuming?

The current setup works just fine; let's just fill in those few gaps and leave well enough alone.

Me too.

There is such thing as data bloat and listing several hundred crew credits for every Tom, Dick & Harry will be just that.
Lets keep it to primary crew (those that 'usually' appear in the opening credits).

The big problem I see with that is - depending on the person - there will always be "gaps" because people have their favorites.

Like I said before (here and at IVS) as far as credits go, I want to know the Producer, Director, and the composer of the film score. Other than that, I don't care personally. I just add the other data now because it's part of the program (and also people would yell at me if I just added what I liked).

Since all three of you feel the current system is fine for these additions, let's see you proposal for handling Make-up for Planet of the Apes. Screen caps have already been posted. After that please post your proposal for Pan's Labyrinth.

Which Planet of the Apes?  I will assume the recent one, since that used Rick Baker's makeup.  I'll have to take a look at it and get back to you.  In the meantime, how about we make some prelim lists for those three?

Costumes By or Wardrobe By are the same thing and depend mostly on the age of the film.

Special Effects are usually pretty straight forward so go with Special Effects By or SFX Supervisor.

Makeup could use Makeup By, or Makeup Supervisor.
