I was watching a DVD recently and it listed the following:

Supervising sound effects editor
Sound effects editor

no other sound personal is listed. My question is would this be the same as:

Supervising sound editor
Sound editor

No, sound effects are different from sound.

Correct, sound effects editors are not listed in the profiles. Some sound experts amongst the community disagree with this, but that is the current rule.

How can You say that? A Production Sound Mixer works on an interior sound stage as well as out on location, even and especially in the hinterlands somewhere. That is because he is in charge of every tiny bit of the production sound (= location sound). He is on location together with the whole film crew delivering the sound recordings from the shooting directly to the editing room.

And concerning 2nd unit: Very often the 2nd unit shoots footage without any sound. But on some film shootings (supposably the bigger expensive films) even the 2nd unit may have a Production / Location Sound Mixer if the sound from the 2nd unit location could be helpful for the post production.

If no other sund personal is mentioned, You can take for granted that it means the same. But as long as this is not covered by the rules You may enter that just locally.

Sound effects are definately NOT the same as the the Sound Editor.

That might all be true, but if the credit is only listed under 2nd Unit we can't use it, even if its the same guy.  But, if there is no Production Sound Mixer listed in the main section sound, or in the post production area, you still can't use Location credits as a substitute.

But location credits are NOT 2nd unit credits - that was your assumption, and it's wrong. There's nothing wrong with crediting location sound - they're even mentioned in the list in the database rules.

Indeed, the credits section of the rules clearly state this about location sound:

Production Sound Mixer:

Production Sound Mixer
Production Mixer
Location Sound Mixer
Sound Mixer (when listed outside the Sound credits)

So as not to confuse people, Location Sound Mixer is an actual credit. It does not mean a PSM who is listed in Location unit or a 2nd unit.

Actually, if he were a mind reader he would know exactly what you meant.  Since he isn't, he only knows what you could have meant.

It's a joke.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.
