I just voted no on a contribution because his two sources were the above. Since IMDB is disallowed by the rules, and Wikipedia is something that can be changed by any user, I worry about the correct info from the site.

Was I wrong to do so?

I just think we need to be more tough on any submission that uses these two sites for info.

It depends on the contribution...

What were they being used as a source for?
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

We will teach it to them again.

I agree with Unicus, though my reasons MIGHT be slightly different from his. Both IMDb and Wikipedia are notoriously inaccurate, so my preference would be an actor/crew website, film website, or as much third part references as reasonable, two or more. Wiki and IMDb are going to be used because they are they are the EASIEST (also the most likely to be erroneous) however, there are times when they MAY literally the only available sources. So, I simply would urge any user caution in the use of two of the most widely known sources for bad data there are, and ALWAYS try to provide sources whcich culd be sued in conjunction with them, but I am always skeptical of the use of Wiki and IMDb as SOLE sources of reference.

Here we go again... First we need to distinguish between cast and crew data mining (forbidden from all sources, all cast and crew data needs to come from the actual DVD) and referring to outside sources to establish certain other things, for instance when trying to prove that John Doe is the same person as John A. Doe. For that kind of thing, there's not a single external source "disallowed by the rules", not even IMDb. The key to documenting such things is often quantity: referring to just ONE source is never a good idea. Try to find at least two or three. Both IMDb and Wikipedia are perfectly acceptable as sources for such things, although the more the merrier.

Which means you are not allowed to blindly copy (one of) them, but you can use them (the more the marier) as evidence to backup your case(s).

Edit: I now see I more or less said the same thing as Tim... Oh well, just goes to show we're on the same frequency.

If it is the same one that I think he's referring to, the contributor used the cast from credits, but since the roles weren't listed there, he went to Wikipedia and IMDB to fill in a few of the major roles.  Seems reasonable enough to me, since he did do everything else possible "as credited".

Taking role names from a 3rd party is allowed by the rules:

If an actor is credited by name but does not have an associated role, you may use another source to identify the role.

If that is the case, then you are correct.  No problem using them as a source.
