We have the 'Original Title' field for the theatrical title.

Original title field is not the theatrical title. It is the title in the country of origin.

US theatrical title : "Amélie" or "La vie en rose"
Original title :"Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain", or "La môme"

French theatrical title : "Le crime était presque parfait"
Original title : "Dial M for Murder"

Contribution rules:  "The Original Title field will contain the original title for the main feature in the country of origin. "

Read the rules again!

Contribution Rules state as well:
Modified Titles: The Original Title field will contain the original theatrical title, while the Title field will contain the title of the DVD release.  For instance, for the Special Edition rerelease of There's Something About Mary:

    * Title: There's Something More About Mary
    * Original Title: There's Something About Mary

I knew that. But, in my collection, the rule I quoted concerns about 70% of titles. For 29,5%, original title = theatrical title, and the rule you quote concerns a very little 0.5%...

No that's what you are doing right now. Because in YOUR collection it's little than 0.5%, that doesn't mean it's also the same for other contributor's collections. For instance, in my collection it's the other way around. In Holland the DVD titles are most of the time directly taken from the movie credits and not translated into the local language like the French, German etc. do. So I don't twist the rules, I just mention the facts, and that are the rules whether you like it or not.

I agree... whether people like it or don't there is 2 separate rules for using the field for 2 separate occasions. Neither one more important then the other.

Wouldn't the 'original title' be the theatrical title?  I mean, when a film is released, that is the first title it is shown under.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

I got a look a your collection. You are quite always in the case "dvd title = original theatrical title" and quite never in the case of modified title rule that you quoted.

As would say somebody....Bangarang!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

Someone seems to be confusing local data with the Rules for CONTRIBUTIONS. He can do whatever he wants locally. Don't try to use HIS data against him.

hahaha! uh you forgot that the online collection only shows the DVD title fields and not the original title fields. So only if you could see into my local data you could make a statement like that. But you simply can't

Except that the "Original Title" field is currently a multi-purpose field, not used just for the "theatrical title".

That's why we need a new field for DVD Title (as well as Original Title and Film Credits Title).

I can easily guess what is the original title of :

2001 : A Space Odyssey
Alien
Aliens
Alien 3
Alien Ressurrection
American Beauty
Blade
Blue Velvet
Bonnie and Clyde
...

and several hundreds other title of the same kind...

I agree with that suggestion. For example, a hypothetical situation:
the German DVD is called "Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod", however it contains a print which has the title in english "Once Upon a Time in the West", but the film's original title in it's CoO is "C'era una volta il West" - which one do we put in Original Title as the rules call for both titles?

A great example of why there should be a field for the Original Title and a field for Film Credits Title.
