As Kinoniki said, you can't take it for granted. And also the PAL-issue might come up, depending on your BD-Player and TV.

I for one still use my old region-free and UOP-free Sony DVP-NS405 and let my Sony HDTV do the upscaling.

They are separate but not all Blu-ray players can be made multi-region for DVD playback. One of my players can be but the other can't. Likewise, how they can be changed varies as well, while the way you mentioned is the most common, mine needed a special remote control to change it.

That's just it though, it's more of a problem the other way around. PAL is a higher resolution than NTSC so it's easier to add support to fit less lines on a screen than it is to fit more on than a screen supports. My region A Blu-ray player doesn't support PAL at all but an almost identical model by a different manufacturer does.

I have the UK DMP-BD30 rather than the 60 but that plays NTSC as well as PAL. ALL UK TVs, VCRs, DVD players, etc... that I've bought over the last 10-15 years support NTSC.

DVD and BD mods are now available that make multi region available on players. Just decide on what it is you need then get a player that suits that modded (Pana and Oppo as examples)

There is a company that sells modified Players in Germany. I looked into it and the modified models cost about $300 more than the regular models..

but as a rule of thumb: WB, New Line, Paramount and Universal are usually Codefree

Sony are 80% Codefree

Lionsgate: The catalog Titles are usually codefree, the new movies are usually coded

Disney: Usually Coded

Fox: They sadly code almost everything.. Recently they let a few titles slip through though (like Wolverine)
