Most forum software today has a configurable edit window for marking posts as edited. If it's set to five minutes, for example, that means that any edits a user makes to their posts won't publicly show that the post has been edited for five minutes after the post is made. This allows a window for correcting typos.

Currently on Invelos, forum posts are marked as edited regardless of when the edit was made. This means that if I notice one mistake in my post that I missed when I proofread it, the post gets marked as edited, even if I notice the typo seconds after I post.

It's EXTREMELY annoying and it would be nice if this could be fixed.

I do not understand this request AT ALL, edit is edit, isn't it, regardless whether you change content after 4 minutes or correct orthography 6 minutes later.

Yeah... this is a head scratcher for me too. So what if it says the post has been edited? Why is that even a concern?

Also, I'm pretty sure there's a timestamp on it, so if you edit it within a couple of minutes of posting people will know that it was a near-immediate edit, since the original posting time remains intact.

edit: As you can see, below it says this was edited at 8:09 AM, but above it says 8:07 AM, since that was the original time of my post.

Yea, I don't get it either...
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

And I don't understand this response AT ALL. If you don't agree or care about my request, then just hit the back button, don't reply, and let the thread die. You get what you want, and you avoid trolling up a fellow user's thread with needless and unprovoked hostility.

Some people are just bothered at having their post marked as edited. Others obviously aren't. This should be an extremely easy thing to set in the forum software. If it isn't an issue, then how come so many forums are configured to have a window where user edited posts don't get marked as edited?

To be fair, that's how it works.  You throw out an idea and people discuss it.  If you don't want people discussing it, send it directly to Invelos as a support ticket or something.  If you only want those who agree to respond, well... That ain't gonna happen.

Ken is a limited resource.  As users, we all get an equal say in how we would like to see that time best used.  Having a large group of people say they don't want to see time wasted on something they consider useless is unfortunately a reality.  Ken can then read this thread, read the replies (both pro and con) and run with it from there.

With that said, I'm on the "I don't get it" side.  I understand the request.  Just not the need.  But if Ken decides this is something worth spending time on, I'm fine with that too.

I agree... I was just about to post the same basic thing. Put something up on the forum... all users if they agree or not has just as much right to reply in the thread to give their opinion on the idea.

Well, first off, I'm simply curious why it bothers you. I can't think of a single reason why it should. Aesthetics, maybe? Or is it just one of those anal retentive things? I'm not trying to get a dig in, I have my own fair share of those issues (as I'm sure many of us do, considering where we're posting this... )

But also, it may not be a simple of a fix as you think it is. I'm pretty sure this entire forum is custom coded by Invelos, considering how integrated it is with the DVD contribution process. It's certainly not phpBB nor is it vBulletin.

I agree with you. As a French user, it happens very often that I make spelling mistakes in English that I see too late. So I have to edit my post to change, for instance, "then" to" than", and it is not a real "edit".

Not a real edit? I don't know... in my mind an edit is and edit... is an edit. Don't see where what has been edited... or how long since the original post makes a difference. But I guess that is me.

I don't see why anyone could give a crap about if you've edited a post or not. Pointless request IMO.

I haven't seen any forums that give an edit grace period. That said, I personally don't see much point to it.

If you're using Firefox with the AdblockPlus add-on, you can create the following rule which will hide that block entirely.
