I have been working with eMusic tech support on this.  Here is the latest info from them -

Quote:
"I just wanted to share an update I got from our 3rd party software developer. Here is what was said.

"Our partner found there is a conflict between the latest DVD Profiler software and both DLM v4 and v5. This might be too much to ask but is there any way that member could use DVD Profiler 3.5 until we have time to investigate a proper solution?"

My response was that I couldn't find a way to download version 3.5.

I'll post more info as I get it

It is now November 5, 2011 and yet still no reply from the moderators!!!
WOW!!!!!

It was a 3rd party program on YOUR computer, that YOU installed that caused problems with DVD Profiler. Your problem was solved by another forum user nearly a month ago.

Why would the forum moderators need to reply to anything?

WOW!!!!!

Well!!!  Now that you've gotten that off of your CHEST, do you feel better now?

I'm just checking back on this today with no real hope, as I hadn't received any email updates on the topic or any other communication in weeks/months (although I see that I am still subscribed to the topic).  To my great and happy surprise, I find a user-discovered solution - and it works for me!

Still deeply disappointed to have had ZERO response from anyone at Invelos, not even "sorry, we don't know" or "you're on your own".  And my support request from Aug. 6 was apparently closed on Dec. 19 with NO comment, NO feedback and NO response.  Even if there's no fix available, I think we deserve better communication than that.  As I said, it's disappointing.

I'll continue to use DVD Profiler because I like the application more than I like any of the alternatives I've found.  If necessary, stupid as it is, I'll uninstall/reinstall eMusic Download Manager as needed.  Maybe one day DVD Profiler will update again, or eMusic will modify their DM, and this application conflict will be resolved.

@weslymoore - I've had no problems with Win 7 64 and DLM 4.1.4 with the DVD Profiler.  I know eMusic support is tied up with the "new site design".  What a mess!!!  I'll try to find my email re customer support and see if they have any new info.  I had forgotten this since I've got it working now.

Sorry.

Once you're logged in to invelos.com, click on Support, then Support Home.  There's a section at the bottom for "Your open and recent support tickets", if any, just below the "Open a new technical support ticket" link.

Sorry.

I'd really be curious to see if eMusic has any more to say or offer on the topic.  I can't imagine resolving a problem with another vendor's application is their first priority, and I really don't know if the problem is eMusic's fault or if it's due to something Invelos has done in their programming that perhaps should have been done differently.

Just for fun, I tried re-installing eMusic Download Manager 4.1.4 and testing - but DVD Profiler fails just as before.  Ditto for version 5.0.5.  DVD Profiler works correctly again after uninstalling the eMusic Download Manager.  Not sure why you're not seeing the same problem, but be glad!  It seems pretty consistent for a lot of others.

@ weslymoore - eMusic has admitted that their 3rd party program is at fault in one of my emails.  Seems they pay another party to do the programming of the DLM.  They said that had contacted them about a fix and shortly after they updated their website which has been nothing but a mess since.  The email said that both 4 & 5 were affected and the conflict was only with the new DVD Profiler.

To me it sounds like a normal software conflict (no company can test for every other program that exists) caused by a change in the DVD Profiler as well as the DLM but I'm no expert.  I've asked for an update from the eMusic customer service rep that I was working with but don't expect a response until next week seeing how it is late Fri.

If I remember correctly DLM 4's issue resolved itself after a few reboots.  I know that I've got it working with DVD Profiler on 2 machines (laptop & desktop - both running win 7 64 bit).  Basically, I got tired of playing with it and went on to install my other software, etc and the next time I tried DVD Profiler, it worked.

I'm inclined to agree - stuff happens, and it's impossible to test for every single potential incompatibility.  I think the factor that disappointed most of us was (and is) the complete lack of communication or any kind of response from Invelos.

Can't say I blame you for moving on.  I looked at some alternatives and just didn't see anything I liked well enough to make the switch.  Of course in the meantime I had nothing, except for a growing pile of DVDs that I hadn't yet catalogued!  Here's hoping that eMusic will be able to correct the conflict on their side.

Yeah, eMusic's website transition has been kind of rocky, hasn't it?

"Rocky" isn't exactly what I would call it.  I'm not sure which is worse - the broken site or the complaining threads.

I suggest trying what I did.  Install DLM 4 and DVD Profiler.  Then do your normal computing stuff for a week or so.  Then try to open DVD Profiler.  That's basically what I did and amazing it worked.  Windows sorted it out somehow is all I can think of.  If it doesn't work the first time, wait a week or so and try again.  You haven't lost anything but time and like me, you may be able to get both working on the same computer.

I've contacted eMusic and we'll see what they say.  Remind me if I forget to respond again.  I'd give you my email, but I'm not sure how on this site and it's too nice outside to stay inside and figure it out today.  Sorry.

I'll definitely check back to see if you get any further updates.  I thought about contacting them myself, and may do so, but if they're already aware of the issue and communicating with you then maybe I'll cut them some slack - they do have a lot going on.

In the meantime, although it's silly it really isn't that big a deal to uninstall and reinstall the Download Manager as needed.  In the end it's must less frustrating than having DVD Profiler not working.

I'm willing to bet that the conflict has to do with a 3rd party dll, maybe related to database or some other system service, that they both use and gets put into windows\system32 or some other common folder.

Here is what I would try if I had the problem:

(1) Uninstall both programs. Clear the recycle bin. Reboot at least once, maybe twice. Take a system checkpoint.
(2) Install DLM first and then DVD Profiler afterwards. Don't run either one yet. Reboot.
(3) If they both work, end of story
(4) If one or both of them doesn't work, restore the system back to the checkpoint and reverse the install order, and reboot
(5) Test again, as in (3)

If neither way results in both programs working consistently, I would then explore using different User IDs, and installing each program for that user only, instead of for all users. Hope this was helpful.

Some people might wonder about the reboots. Programs that use shared dlls can sometimes use a memory stored copy of a dll, even after the orginal has been changed or even deleted. That can cause confusion. I had once a while back, where I am almost certain that a program followed a drag/drop of a dll into the recycle bin. Drove me crazy. That's why now I try to make sure that the dll is gone from everywhere when I suspect wierd things are going on.

Oh, and another thing - environment variables: If by chance two programs are calling another program by the same name - but it does different things, by reference through paths in the environment, all "*&(*(" can break loose. Just a simple dll or .exe naming conflict. But that is something that a techie would need to check out for you (e.g. by messing with the path variable in the Environment). It is this kind of thing that results in it working for some, and not for others, or working sometimes and not other times, or being dependent on the order of installation.

The best way to resolve that kind of issue is to put the individual copies of the conflictingly named resource in a directory with the program exe file, so that the call gets staisfied before going to the shared folder.
Thanks for your support.

Thank Mediadogg  I'll keep that in mind should I have to install from scratch again.  I have an image with it working so that is what I'll use going forward.

FWIW - The order of the install does not make a difference.  Hard reboots between the installs does not make a difference.  Why after time, does it start working, I'm not sure.

History -
New laptop - Win 7 64 bit
Did Windows updates, etc & multiple hard reboots
Added my printers and Office 2007 with hard reboots between programs (I had trouble with restart a number of years ago so don't use it during installs any more)  I also test each and every program after an install.
Added DLM version 5 with hard reboot
Added DVDProfiler - would not open
Took laptop back to factory original
Installed printers & Office 2007 again - like above with hard reboots and testing after each install
installed DVDProfiler - works - hard reboot
Installed DLM version 5 - works - hard reboot
Tried DVD Profiler - would not open - same error
Uninstalled DLM - hard reboot
Tried DVD Profiler - opens with no issues
sent error logs to eMusic
Installed DLM version 4 (since version 4 was working fine with DVD Profiler on desktop running Win 7 64 bit) - hard reboot
Tried DVD Profiler - same error
Ran out of time and carried on with my installs
After about a week, tried DVD Profiler - works!!!!
Tired DLM version 4 - works
Ran image program

Only other thing that I can think of that might tell you something is that both the desktop and laptop run basically the same programs.

According to eMusic's 3rd party - there is a conflict between the latest DVD Profiler & DLM versions 4 & 5.  They suggested that I go back to a previous verion of DVD Profiler which isn't available and doesn't have the conflict.  They are supposed to be working on a fix according to eMusic customer support.

Thanks for the complement, Mediadogg.  I know enough to be dangerous.

It was just fortunate that I ran into the issue on a brand new laptop so cust support wouldn't think it was a corrupt operating system or some other program that I installed.

Win 7 is supposed to have a number of programs working in the background to "fix" operating system issues.  Maybe they fixed it.  I haven't been interested enough to dig into what it does or doesn't do.  The only other program that I forgot to mention is Norton 360.  I run it on both machines and I know that it checks for registry errors, etc and "fixes" them.  Again, I didn't check if the registry fixer was enabled or not.  (Never thought about it until now).  Norton, I run with default settings except turning off backup and identity safe (or whatever that is called).  I also find that I have to exclude a couple of directories from scanning or Norton thinks they are viruses and then some games don't play - annoying since I paid for those games from Gamehouse for when I am brain dead. FWIW - Norton is always the last of my basic programs that I install so this could be why it works after a week or so.  Maybe all of this will tell you something.
