I don't think you'll get much millage on older movies in 4K because the resolution wasn't high to begin with.

It depends on the condition of the source material that the 4K scan was derived from.

Naturally, modern day films have negatives and high-resolution prints in more pristine condition, so a 4K scan (with HDR enhancement) will have more potential to impress the eye than say a 4K scan of an old scratchy negative, worn-out print or lower-resolution print.

From a technical point of view, film camera negatives have far greater resolution than 4K.

Based on what you ordered recently, "The Shining" is the oldest movie and I can tell you the 4K version of that film was derived from a 4K scan of the original 35mm camera negative, and it is awesome in comparison to the Blu-ray version.

On the other hand, the 4K King Kong Ultimate Edition was derived from a 4K scan of a 2K digital intermediate, but the image is still impressive, particularly the dazzling colours, far better than the Blu-ray.

If in doubt, read reviews from say, blu-ray.com, before you buy.

Personally I have had better experiences with older material. Pre-digital films can look awesome if they have been properly restored. While some films from the digital era don't look much better (and sometimes worse) than the blu-ray. The main benefit is HDR but that also fails somtimes for lack of effort and competence. Check out some reviews before you buy. I can recommend the Films At Home channel on Youtube that you link to.

I agree with ObiKen's technical points, and iPatsa comes right down to it: common sense. Read reviews, check it out yourself, because one size does not fit all.

Of those you posted, I vote for Transformers or King Kong to get the full impact of 4K, HDR colors and Atmos sound. Oh, I just noticed Avengers Endgame. Oh yeah!

Unfortunately none of these are true 4K releases. I'd go with Passengers for the full 4k experience.

Hmm ... didn't realize that. Not sure I could tell the difference between what you are calling "true" 4K and whatever it is they have. I have pretty decent equipment, so it would be interesting to know if you can ACTUALLY see a difference, or if you are talking about a technical distinction (on paper). I will watch them again this weekend as homework, since all my commitments have been postponed or cancelled due to the virus precautions.

Passengers was filmed in 6.5K and mastered in 4K. The other ones were at some point upscaled from 2K. Not to say they look bad, but there is certainly a difference between "true" 4K and the rest.

So far I watched 2 of my 4k movies..

Passangers - While entertaining... the film left some to be desired. But Wow! the visuals and and sound... fantastic!

Justice League - I prefered the movie over Passangers... and while looking and sounding great Passangers had it beat.
