as that's often the bit visible on the shelf in the shop.

Here its almoust always the front cover thats visible in stores (or maby just in the ones i use, not sure). It would be very frustrating if i only saw the spine, as it doesnt give enough info if its worth picking up for closer observation.

They definitely seem to use less powerful adhesive on the hi-def ones, they peel off smashingly.

It isn't how powerful it is.  None of them peel for crap if they have been exposed to heat.  That causes the glue to cellophane bond to weaken, leaving the clue itself behind when you peel off the tape.  You don't see it much in the new releases because they haven't usually been sitting in some warehouse or a truck baking in the sun.

Rubbish. The dye used the colour the elite cases red or blue is susceptible to being removed by strong adhesives, which is why a gentler label is used for hi-def releases (sometimes you can see a hint of the colour on the label after removing it). I open both brand-new and long-released DVDs all the time, the security labels are generally the same, and far stickier than those for hi-def.

believe it or not you can use WD40 to remove the adhesive. Take out the label and then spray some WD40 on a paper towel and rub away the goo. Then use a little alcohol to clean the WD40 residue off.  A little extra work but it does work. Or you can do what I do is get new DVD cases and pitch the gooey ones. I'm lazy and don't really have a lot of time to clean that crap off. Except when it comes to the special cases or 2 disc cases.

I will almost always take the R1 security tape over all the Europian ratings markings (permanant at that) that ruin the cover art of the DVD cases!!!

Point taken

It actually surprises me that, considering the power of the MPAA, they haven't managed to influence the size of the rating symbols on the cases in US.

The worst of them all is Australia, though. THEY are UGLY! The size of cigarette warnings  They're the reason I almost never buy Australian DVDs.

The new Australian ones are big and ugly. One or two distributors obviously agree because they have taken to printing an identical cover on the other side of the paper without the rating. Turn the cover art over and the problem is solved. If only everyone put that much thought into their releases.

Well the front cover is on display for the newer titles but once something is 'old stock' so they often only have one or two copies many shops tend to rack them differently... same as a bookshop really and the same about info applies to books too.

I believe that Madman Entertainment are doing it for all of their Directors Suite series. See: http://www.ezydvd.com.au/mech/quicksearch.zml?f=title&q=directors+suite

and

http://www.madman.com.au/actions/label.do?method=view&labelId=62

I have heard rumours that others intend to follow but haven't seen it myself yet.

To remove the stickers of the R1 dvd's, peel it off as slowly as possible. This will leave less glue behind.
The glue that remains, in most cases, can be removed easily by using the sticker you just removed.
Just dip it multiple times on the remaining glue. Never try rubbing on the glue cause this will smudge the glue. If you just keep dipping on the glue it should come off completely.

WD-40, eh?  Hrm.

With WD-40 and ducttape, there's nothing even Macgyver couldn't do.

We use scotch tape, press it down and pull up quick, works most of the time. For the stubborn ones, take out the label, and rub small amounts of smooth peanut butter over the adhesive and wipe off with a paper towel.

I have to know - how in the world did you think to put peanut butter on the DVD to remove the adhesive?!
