We don't get many hurricanes here in Arizona so I expect I can't really know what you are going through. But what they are showing of TV looks nasty |

" 42-year-old Claudene Christian, was found unresponsive in the water on Monday evening." From the reports I heard that they set sail when they learned the intensity it would hit the coast. They decided to set sail in an attempt to save the ship, but could not clear it in time. At least that what was on some early news reports. |

Power expected to be out the better part of a week | | | -JoN |

| Posted: | | | | I live north of Dover in Delaware in a town called Smyrna. We had lots of rain and some wind, but all in all escaped this storm with very little damage. I had lights on the posts of my deck and one blew off. We did not lose power at all, which was surprising. Lots of leaves in the yard. No trees down around us and no other damage has been seen at this time. We just now got the okay from the Governor to drive. They had a statewide ban on driving since yesterday morning. It has turned very cold here today. I feel very fortunate that we did not get the brunt of this storm. I also feel very sorry for those who did. | | | Antec Nine Hundred case, 4GB A-Data DDR2 800 RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz, ASUS P5K-E/WIFI-AP MB, XFX GeForce 8600GT XXX 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 video card, ZALMAN CNPS9500 AT 2 Ball CPU Cooling Fan/Heatsink, Seagate Barracuda 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s HDD, Zerodba 620W PSU, LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD with LightScribe SATA, Samsung CDDVDW SH-S203B SATA, Hanns-G HH281 28" monitor, Kodak ESP3250 printer, Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers, Windows 7 Professional |

| Posted: | | | | Most of Buffalo came through quite well. The only problem I have is the basement got a little flooded - but that happens all the time with heavy rain.
There are approximately 500 people are without electricity and although there are lots of branches down we only lost a few trees.
The biggest local news stories are the cancelled flights - a friend of mine is stuck in Russia - and the people surfing the waves on Lake Erie. |

| Posted: | | | | It has been labeled as the storm of the century (but isn't that a bit early with still 88 years to go?) and by now I've seen the TV news reports ans internet news sites with some of the damages caused. Yes, it is news in the Netherlands too. Horrible for any one to have damage inflicted on their properties or worse, injuries or fatalities with loved ones.
But that said, living in a country that has 50%+ of the countryside below sea level and with a lot of defenses against sea surges or rivers bursting their banks, I am a bit baffled seeing cities like NYC, with a sea front directly to the huge Atlantic Ocean, doesn't have some proper sea defenses for a mere 3 to 3.5 meter surge. I am not saying there are no defenses there (I do not know really), but... how can this be?
I do not hear of any planning for the Tenerife tsunami or the Norge tsunami or... (all predicted massive landslides). The Atlantic may have fewer tsunamis than the Pacific or the Indian Ocean, but to seemingly rule it out... or are action taken but not reported?

Eric I agree with you.... This area does not have any type of sea barriers except natural bays (NYC is surrounded by rivers and bays, quite a bit always from full ocean)... The reason is that it is extremely rare for this area to get a hurricane. Normally we get me remnants or a tropical storm at worse. Last year and this year we got hurricanes. Crazy. | | | -JoN |

| Posted: | | | | You can bet when Atlantic City rebuilds their water front .. they will put in place a better barrier ... | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

| Posted: | | | | Quoting eommen: Quote: ... living in a country that has 50%+ of the countryside below sea level ... You answered your own question. It is a cost / benefit equation. This storm is said to be the worst one to ever hit the US, with lowest barometric pressure ever recorded on the East Coat. The cost of recovery will be in the Billions. The inconvenience will be massive. NYC is crippled (for a few days) and some cities in New Jersey are 50% covered by water. But check back in a month ... The flip side is that the injuries and loss of life are, so far, less than 100. Sad and tragic, but nowhere near the mass loss of life if Holland gets flooded (maybe millions of lives lost). Notice how much more energy and expense is spent on the Gulf Coat (e.g. New Orleans). It is not enough, but it is vastly more than is spent (per capita) than on the East Coast - because the expectation of the risk for loss of life is different. That's the equation that drives the focus. | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here. Hey, new product!!! BDPFrog. | | | Last edited: by mediadogg |

| Posted: | | | | We got power back 2:15 this afternoon, so now the pump is running to get the rest of the water out--it had begun to recede already. Due to traffic, it took me 2 3/4 hours for what should be a 1 1/4 hour bus ride this morning to get to an alternative location for work. I finally got out and walked the last 1 1/2 miles and made much better time than the bus. I set up a fan to blow out through the basement to dry it out as well. |
