| Posted: | | | | Quoting DJ Doena: Quote: Personally, I don't use the digital copy because I don't watch movies on the computer and my big screen is hooked up to a proper BR player. I got news for you buddy. Your "proper BR player" is a computer - a special purpose appliance with hardware and firmware limited to the decoding of BD media. PowerDVD is also a proper BR player (they pay all the fees), running on PC hardware and memory instead of firmware. Now, I know you know all this, and I do get your point - I'm just messin' with ya ( ), to point out that it is mostly a matter of perspective, packaging and usage style, rather than a fundamental difference that we are talking about here. BTW, a couple of my "proper" BD players have DLNA, Netflix, Youtube, VUDU (for Ultarviolet), Amazon Prime Videos and other streaming apps built-in, along with the BD disc decoding. Those firmware codecs do just as fine a job with HD videos on my hard drive as they do on the files on the BD disc. I have heard a rumour that Sony will not produce a follow-on to its 400 disc BD changer, but rather will go to cloud-based (local / remote) storage and access of the digital files. I can't wait. I have no more space to store plastic boxes and don't want to spend any more money on shelves, cabinets or changers. | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. It may be "proper" to you, but it's low bitrate and looks like crap to me. Putting "BD Disc Decoding" in the same category as all the other crap you listed is beyond reproach. Everyone wants cheap and instant, with no regard to quality. No more Blockbuster stores, no more plasma TV's, and probably soon, due to attitudes like yours, no more physical discs. So of course with streaming, you give up all control over your own library. Netflix pulls stuff from their streaming library all the time. They can't touch your discs. But I guess people don't care about that. How disheartening. | | | 99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1." |

| Posted: | | | | While I do redeem all my UV codes, because of my preconceived notions, I have never actually watched a digital copy. Because of the debate here, I decided to take a look at the UV copy of The Hobbit on my Surface Pro2...I stream through Flixster...and I have to say, the picture quality was pretty good.
Normally, when I would go on a trip, I would pack an assortment of titles to watch along the way and during down time, but with this new revelation, I anticipate not needing to take that risk in the future. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | As I only hook up my PS3 to the internet when I have to download a firmware patch, I have no use for digital copies. I suppose I could watch them on my nook if I did any travelling, but I don't. If I've got time to watch something, then I'm at home on the couch. The only thing I watch on the computer are youtube clips.
Also I prefer physical media over streaming or cloud because if something happened and I had to cancel my internet service for budgetary reasons, I'd still have stuff to watch. | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. -- Thorin Oakenshield |

Beyond reproach? Then I guess we agree. Other mistakes in your reply: - thinking that nastiness enhances the validity of your argument (it actually has the opposite effect) - equating streaming with loss of control (you can also stream what you own) - not understanding that it is possible for a person to find value in different business propositions. I do not equate Netflix rentals with private ownership, and therefore don't expect to get the same benefits. It doesn't have to be all one or the other. But of that's your preference, so be it. And the reason I gave up on Blockbuster had nothing to do with streaming: - high prices for renting and purchase. - dirty, scratched discs sometimes - burn gas and time going to the store - wait in line for checkout Maybe other people had other reasons, but those were mine. | | | Thanks for your support. To be frank, here in Australia they are just a means to put a higher price on buying blu-ray editions of movies. I have noticed a big change over the last year or two. You used to be able to go and buy a new release on dvd or on blu-ray with the blu-ray being a little more expensive - that sounds kinda reasonable.
However, recently, new releases here are available on dvd or on blu-ray/dvd/digital copy - they simply don't offer just a blu-ray version in a lot of cases. And the price, you guessed it, double the price of a dvd version.
"oh but you're getting both the dvd version and the blu-ray version", I hear them say, "you're getting 2 copies plus a digital copy thrown in for free!"
Crap.. let me just buy the blu-ray only version for just a few bucks more then, is what I say. |

| Posted: | | | | I can make my own "digital copies" if I should need them, which doesn't happen very often. Since this is legal for personal use here and also paid for through a "private copy fee" on every blank media I buy, I don't think any additional copies are needed (and I definitely don't want to pay for them twice). And they don't see to be very common here anyway, but then I'm mostly gone over to streaming instead of buying physical discs. I'm sure the quality has gone down as a result but I don't need 1080p and DTS HD MA to enjoy a film, since both my eyesight and hearing are getting dimmer. | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 |

| Posted: | | | | Actually I agree with Parsec, if I had my choice, I would prefer to decide when I pay for a digital copy or not. I'm all for consumer choice.
But given I don't have that choice most of the time, I will try to get maximum use of whatever it is that I am paying for. Before UV took hold, I was throwing away the digital copies because the usage model was ridiculous. But UV has at least made it so that I can easily view the video whenever and wherever I want, (supposedly) forever. | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Crap.. let me just buy the blu-ray only version for just a few bucks more then, is what I say. That does kinda suck. My experience has been quite different. The Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy version is, on average, $5 more than the DVD only version. If I had to pay double, I would have a different opinion. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | I just checked my Ultraviolet collection in VUDU, and my HDX titles (e.g. G.I. Joe) are listed as 1080p, Dolby Digital Plus 5.1. Of course, I couldn't imagine that the data rates are on par with Blu-Ray, but these movies look and sound pretty good on my equipment, which is not cheap.
This environment is moving so fast, I would encourage anyone to do a bit of study before ranting based on months old or years old assumptions and information. | | | Thanks for your support. | Posted: | | | | I am not really a fan of streaming if I can have the physical media. I also am not a fan of trying to store all of the physical media. Maybe I can get a bag of holding and store all of them easier. I do not have any kind of antennae or cable or dish that I can watch TV on. I can however stream Amazon Prime through my Xbox and I do that with the free media. This has also allows me to watch movies before I bought them and go, "Wow, dodged that bullet." Streaming is great, for some things. I watched BSG, Castle, Blacklist, Marvel's Agent's of Shield and Almost Human all through streaming. To get the most out of them though I'll buy them on physical media when they become available. As for ultra violet I have never used it and really do not intend to. I am sure I can create an account and spend do days enter codes all of which are probably expired now, but why I have the physical media. |
