You could always share the profiles privately by backing up/restoring individual profiles - but without creating a huge thread about it I'm not sure how you'd find out which ones to share!

ROFL. I like it James. but your example also highlights the sheer foley of Lopek's observation as far as the Online is concerned.

Anthony Hopkins
Angelina Jolie
Val Kilmer
Christopher Plummer

Are not KEY stars, as Andy puts it. I would disagree with that...big time...which is why it has to be local. That said perhaps someone could come up with a method for "sharing", I send Cover Scans all over the place on request, generally about 50 requests/week.

While you may not agree that they are KEY stars, James took the order from the opening credits.  That means the film maker thought they were 'key' enough to be placed there.  Reading is fundamental.

You made a false observation.  James put those actors ahead of the rest because that is what the film makers did.  Had you read James' post first, you would not have made the false assumption you did about Lopek's post...well, you still might have but it wouldn't have made any sense.

The only problem I can see with such a local cast list is when the online list is updated.  You'll have to compare, take notes, and manually edit your cast list (assuming it's locked) to add them.  But I also assume that if you take on the effort of making your local cast list like that, you also don't mind updating it.

Now if only 75% of the movies I've recently watched weren't missing cast members....

Exactly.
Besides, the Movie Pick tool checks for similiraty the first ten actors, as default.

I didn't know that. That's very interesting. Seems like my little trick is good for program functionality in a few different areas.

The end credits rule clashes with program functionality in other areas as well.
  • The Details View shows the first three actors as "Featuring:".

  • Reports usually limit the the number of cast entries.

Since the Reports and Layouts are generated by users and not Invelos, that would be up to the people designing said Reports and Layouts. Kind of like expecting Microsoft to be responsible because the third party developers aren't smart enough to properly incorporate their API's.. Functionality works fine IF you design things properly.

So please enlighten me: How do create a report that extracts the (let's say) 3 top-billed actors from a cast list that follows the order of the end credits? And why does the Details View doesn't show them?

The Rules are designed just fine, thank you very much GoodGuy. They like Invelos is not responsible for the shortcomings in the Report system...unless there is some built-in limtation in Ken's setup that does not allow you to set a larger variable for the data. I have to much to do, to worry about Reports but for you i will look into it and see what i can find.

The Rules are also not responsible for your desire to manipulate the Online data to suit your proclivities. That is the perview of your local and why we have a two tier system.

But that's the point. I don't want a large number. I only want the first few top-billded or "featured" actors. Unfortunately, the end credits are alphabetical or in order of appearance or whatever, and the rules say to use that order.

But hey, I'm just a dumb 3rd party developer, who doesn't understand how DVD Profiler works...

    GoodGuy:

Based upon what I see in a few of the reports I have on hand, it doesn't appear to be a problem caused by Ken.

Depending upon the configuration of the report, if a Box is being used to list Cast members or Crew; once that box is filled it's done. Answer Bigger Box. In other cases where the report resembles the Profiler layout the users list
    DVDCast01
    DVDCast02
    DVDCast03
and so on, a couple of the reports have multiple pages to allow for the larger amount of data in many movies. So the possibility is there, the report writer merely has to take advantage of it.

Ok that's fine you have to balance your needs against what is going to come down the tube from the Online. You are free to araange your data in ANY WAY that you wish, that is why we have a Localdatabase. It is IMPOSSIBLE for the Online to provide for the wants and needs of every user, it is merely the place we all start from. You want the Online to be this way, somebody else wants it that way, and so on, everybody is DIFFERENT and we have been down that road before and it was a total wreck. We even had users trying to impose THEIR sort on the database, so that all the James Bonds would be together as THEY wanted it to be, to hell with somebody that wanted to look up Thunderball, they weren't going to find it un;less they knew how it was sorted that week.

I empathize with you but I don't sympathize.

    So to summarize:

  • I pointed out a clash between the designed program functionality and the rules.

  • You said there were no such clash, the 3rd party developer / user has to be smart enough to use the program properly.

  • I asked you how that could be done while applying the current rules.

  • You couldn't provide an answer and resorted to your usual banalities.
  • Matthias
