Hello,
I am a newbie here, I just had my first contribution knocked back because, yes I used IMDB.com for the cast and credits(it was a R4 dvd), yes I should of checked these forums out first before submitting it!!
Is it possible for me to resubmit the originally knocked back contribution, and  use something other than  the IMDB, for the cast and credit information, if so, what are good sources of info for getting such details?

Thanks

We only accept the actual film credits for cast and crew.  If roles are not provided by the credits, then we can use an outside source, but for roles only.

First best source: the DVD/BD - the credits (you need to enter them yourself or somehow verify what you submit is valid - you can't just glean info from somewhere else and submit it.)

Second best: tools that can read the info (audio tracks, etc.) on the disc.

If those don't suffice then third party sites might provide info, so long as multiple 3rd party sites support what you propose.

IMDb is suspect 1) for the quality of the info and 2) because of copyright issues.

The profiles are user created and the goal is disc-accurate info.

You can always borrow the info from another Region's disc, but you should then compare what they have with what your disc shows in it's credits.

DVDp - it's not just an adventure, it's a job!
Bad movie?  You're soaking in it!

There is only one good source for this info.  That source is the film credits.

So, umm, the only way I can do the cast and crew credits are by getting a pad and pencil and after the film finishes, by slowly(freeze framing even) the credits and writing them down this way? Forget it, a ridiculous and a waste of time.

It's easier while playing the dvd on the computer.  Then, you just have to pause the movie and write the credits.
For dvds I can't read on my computer, I will freeze the credits on the tv and take a picture with a digital camera.  Then I can view the picture on the computer and write the credits.

Also, you don't have to do all the credits.  Just the main cast of perfectly acceptable.

Up to you if you want to do it or not of course. But I wouldn't... nor do I think many people would do it with a pad and pencil. what I personally do is..

Watch the DVD's credits on my computer (I use PowerDVD)... with Profiler open with the cast/crew editor open... pause the DVD when I have a full page of listings... and type it directly into profiler. I usually have the PowerDVD screen set right next to the editor so I don't even have to go from window to window.

This way is the only way to ensure complete accuracy for the cast/crew. And so we don't have to worry about Invelos getting in legal trouble for taking someone else's data.

Of course if you don't want to do it this way... and no one is saying you have to... you do have the choice of taking the info from anywhere you want... and using their info... only difference is you can not upload it to the main online database as it does not follow the rules. So you would have to keep that info local. And you may want to lock your cast and crew info so that the per credits info doesn't overwrite it if/when it is added later.

I tried to bite my tongue, but I just have to chime in here. While the others are obviously 100% correct - we take cast and crew from the actual credits - dvd_fan's point of view isn't a particularly strange one: what percentage of the DVD Profiler community actually does personally copy everything from the film's credits? I know I do, and I'm also happy to believe the others that posted in this thread, but all in all I think it's pretty rare. Worse: just copying the data from the credits doesn't even lead to "correct" data: that data needs even more work (a lot!) to incorporate proper use of "common names" and the "credited as" feature. There really are only a few people who go through that extensive process for each and every of their profiles. In reality, the vast majority of the cast and crew data is just copied from profile to profile, and instead of telling that to dvd_fan, he's just being shot down - simply for expressing what I think is the opinion of at least 90% of DVD Profiler's userbase.

So, dvd_fan, here you go: if you don't feel like painstakingly copying all cast and crew data from the credits from scratch - don't worry. Often, you'll be able to find another profile for the same title you're entering in a different region/locality, and it's perfectly acceptable to use that as a base for your own profile - you would then only have to check against the actual credits whether the data is accurate, but that's a lot less work than having to start from scratch. If you write in your contribution rules something along the lines of "cast and crew copied from the existing profile with UPC xxxxxx-xxxxxx, re-checked against the actual credits" (fill in actual UPC), you should have no problems in getting it approved.

And since nobody else got around to it: welcome to DVD Profiler!

What i do is play the DVD in WMP next to the Edit Profile window (like tarantino)

This also makes it easy to check the credits against the actual DVD if you have copied the cast and crew from another profile like Tim suggested.

And welcome to the forums

If you already have the data from IMDB entered, you don't have to erase it.  Just verify it against the actual credits from the movie.  If it matches, list the DVD as the source and you're good to resubmit.  If there are differences, simply modify the data to match the real credits, the list the DVD as the source and resubmit.

Unless IMDB was way off, you already have most of the work done.
