Can I ask for a slight amendment to the 'functionality'. The best way that I've seen spoiler's done is as yu have, but the colour changes to something visible when you hover over the spoiler element (using the :hover CSS pseudo class). It's just easier than selecting the text.

Stuart

Can I counter that and ask that it doesn't happen?  I like the current system because it takes a conscious effort to disclose spoilers.  What is being suggested allows accidental disclosure, and as someone who reads subtitles, I can take in quite a bit of text in a short time.  Even just the mouse passing over something could be enough for my brain to take in enough to ruin something.

As for the lifespan (mentioned elsewhere), I agree with others that there should be an indefinite lifespan on spoilers.  There are classics I've still not seen, and it's quite common for movies/shows that did poorly at cinemas/on telly to get legs on DVD years after their release.

The way to decide if it's a spoiler - is it a key plot point?  If in doubt, HIDE IT!

I agree a hover method would be bad, poor mouse placement could defeat the purpose...

The best implementation of spoiler tag i've seen creates a button that says "Spoiler - Click to Show" and then once you click that it opens up below in the same color as the forum... the selection aspect is not needed, as i find that to be kind of annoying... and that way it can hide pictures as well...

In all fairness it has been suggested numerous times by many people. I guess the timing was right this time is all. You could thank Rifter for prompting me to make the request

Just goes to show you no matter how many times something is suggested it never hurts to bring it up again (excluding CD profiler of course  )

Well...thank goodness these forums didn't exist while Gunsmoke was on the air or we would have had to wait for our grandchildren to post anything regarding the series .

The spoiler I refered to was posted on April 13, 2008, less than a month after the R1 release and a full month BEFORE it was released in other countries.

So what? It was aired on television a full year before that. There were no secrets after that.

Cliff's post was 'off topic'.  It revealed plot details in a thread where you wouldn't expect it to happen.  That, by itself, makes it bad netiquette.

It's still only your opinion that it was a spoiler. You're saying so doesn't make it so.

The idea that as soon as something was aired on US TV, then everybody knows it.. well, no.

I don't understand why you believe that using the spoiler tag is so terrible? By using these you would be able to post/discuss more about a film - and if you want to reveal how a film ends 2 hours after the first showing.. well now you can just by putting it in a spoiler tag.

You should be pleased they are available?

Why you persist on making unfounded statements is beyond my comprehension.

I never said that "as soon as something is aired on US TV, then everybody knows it". I said this series was televised over one year ago. That is hardly "as soon as...".

And I never said that using spoiler tags was so terrible. Where did you pull that one out of? In fact, I said that I had no problem with using spoiler tags. I even voted yes on the poll for cry'n out loud.

I just don't get some people.

This tells me that you don't pay much attention in the forums.  Something I have learned from reading these forums, and this goes all the way bact to IVS, is that there are a lot of people that do not watch shows when they are aired on TV.  Quite a few wait until the show is released on DVD...some actually wait until the complete series is released.  Why don't they deserve a little common courtesy?

Actually, it wasn't just my opinion.  It was also the opinion of the people who had not seen that seasons episodes yet.

To paraphrase, it is only your opinion that it wasn't a spoiler.  You're saying so doesn't make it so.  The simple fact that several users objected to the information being revealed should tell you that it was, in fact, a spoiler.

I honestly don't get this "I don't think it is a spoiler so too bad for you" attitude.

I completely agree.
I assume, Ken did a quick hack (thank you, Ken) and will do a better implementation once he is no longer so busy with 3.5.

Fairy snuff. Guess it's not so great a suggestion after all. But I agree that I'd like to see something a bit easier than highlighting.

This is the code i use on my testforum:

<div style="padding: 3px; background-color: #FFFFFF; border: 1px solid #d8d8d8; font-size: 1em;"><div style="text-transform: uppercase; border-bottom: 1px solid #CCCCCC; margin-bottom: 3px; font-size: 0.8em; font-weight: bold; display: block;"><span onClick="if (this.parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].getElementsByTagName('div')[0].style.display != '') {  this.parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].getElementsByTagName('div')[0].style.display = ''; this.innerHTML = '<b>Spoiler: </b><a href=\'#\' onClick=\'return false;\'>hide</a>'; } else { this.parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].getElementsByTagName('div')[0].style.display = 'none'; this.innerHTML = '<b>Spoiler: </b><a href=\'#\' onClick=\'return false;\'>show</a>'; }" /><b>Spoiler: </b><a href="#" onClick="return false;">show</a></span></div><div class="quotecontent"><div style="display: none;">{TEXT}</div></div></div>

Which looks like this:

Dunno if this works "out of the box" on this forum but i am sure Ken can figure it out

You said So what? It was aired on television a full year before that. There were no secrets after that.""

Makes me think that you thought that as soon as it appeared on TV, everybody knew it. I appologise if I have totally misunderstood this statement. I just hadn't understood that what you actually meant was So what? It was aired on television a full year before that. There were no secrets after that.""  a year later.""

But I'm sure you can understand my confusion.

And I do not persist in making unfounded statements.

And unfortunatly my telepathy wasn't working so I wasn't able to tell that you were in favour of spoiler tags. Again, the only thing I had to go on was the impression that people gave by what they said.

I just don't get some people.
