Over the years I've been visiting these forums, I can't say that I've seen much if any political or religious discussion here.  Maybe I just didn't notice it.  Has there been much discussion along these lines here?

There really wasn't any until the '08 elections.  That is when things got a little out of control.

I personally have never seen a message board where political and religious topics were allowed and they DIDN'T get out of hand.  Emotions get heated and even on-topic conversations often find themselves dragged back into the muck because posters can't separate the two.  The reason is that when posters are discussing these issues, they feel like their core beliefs are being attacked, no matter how civil the conversation is.  These boards often create a separate political forum, or an "anything-goes" section and it never stays there.  Posters start to quote their opponents in their signatures to make them look foolish, or you will get a "Of course you would say that, look at the idiotic things you write in the political forum."  I don't see how such a section would strengthen this community, since we have enough problems with on-topic conversations remaining civil.

Very well analysed: this is exactly how it is and used to be here.

As I read the opinions of those who want to ban political and religious discussions, I have to wonder, will that ban extend to taglines, avatars and signatures?
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

I say try a political/religious forum and see how it goes.  If things spill over into other areas then dropping it altogether would probably be for the best.  Not sure on the moderation side though, definitely a basic level is needed to ensure the forum rules are being abided and that there are no personal attacks but posts being edited for very small things that may or may not offend someone is probably going to be counter productive.

Personally I've never been offended by anything on these boards, if there's something I don't want to read I don't read it.

I voted to let this type of forum be available for those who which to contribute or read them.

Would it be possible, for those who do not want to see this type of forum, to enable them to block it?

I'd imagine it would be an opt-in forum like the contribution rules and plugin development forums.  Just guessing though.

Maybe an Opt-In that's more than just a mouse-click as in some kind of hoop has to be involved.

Some people HAVE to read a forum if it's available.

Actually, that's an excellent idea.  In addition to making it opt-in, add a check box for a statement that if granted access, the poster agrees to keep discussions in that area IN that area, and not drag things into other forums, under penalty of losing posting privileges altogether for, say, 30 days. That also makes the job of moderating such an area much easier, maybe even superfluous.

That should keep the looky-loos out, and put everybody on notice that any cross-over will be dealt with harshly.  I had a similar setup on my BBS years ago for the Adults Only area, and never had any problems with any of those who used that area (over 200 of the 850 active users).

I had a flame room on my BBS - and before they could view it, they had to view a disclaimer every time.  I think that would be a good idea too.

For once I agree 100% with something that you write. But the rules must be really strictly followed for this to work. What I mean is to not give a free pass to someone because he/she is a long time user or a good friend of the owner. We have some section like this on some other forum that I frequent that was created because the situation was out of control in the general area and that had corected the problem. Not that I will participate or check a section like this one, but if I don't have to read it and the section is seal from the rest I could easilly live with it.
