why is the "Anamorphic Widescreen " button disabled on most HD DVDs
The HD DVDs are listed as Widescreen & you can't edit  them to make it show Anamorphic

HD DVDs can't be anything other than anamorphic.  Since they're anamorphic by definition, there's no reason to enable that button and allow people to enter it incorrectly.

then they should be listed as such , they are listed as "Widescreen". Kinda looks strange when scrolling through my collection & the SD DVDs say Anamorphic Widescreen & the HDs don't.

If Wikipedia is correct, then you can't really say HD DVDs are Anamorphic, and it would be wrong to mark them as such.

Ananmorphic is a 16:9 picture sqeezed to 4:3, so the TV (or DVD player for the unfortunate without 16:9 TVs) will stretch it back to 16:9 to regain the aspect ratio. No such things happens on HD DVD or Blu-ray - they are simply 16:9 natively.

Lars

In fact they are not anamorphic widescreen (the pictures is not "streched"), they are in real widescreen ratio.

not to be confused with letterbox widescreen... which would be a widescreen picture with black bars encoding directly into it... disgusting...

Not ideal maybe, but still better than P&S or FF.

So with HD we can now talk about vertical letterboxing for 4:3 titles and anamorphic 1.33:1

The Casablanca HD releases would be technically be anamorphic 1.33:1 wouldn't they?

They are disabled, because there isn't anamorphic for HD.

to quote myself from an earlier discussion:
Quote:
The squeeze would enhance the vertical resolution, but it would lessen the horizontal, so you'd have a zero sum game.
The reason why anamorphic works on CRT-TVs is because they don't have a fixed horizontal resolution. For every pixel-based technic anamorphic squeeze is devils-work.

And the whole squeeze-thingi was only neccessary in the first place because the picture was in 4:3 on the DVD, HD is 16:9 so the crutch anamorphic goes where all the other obsolete technics go ...

"vertical letterboxing" is actually called pillarboxed.

I don't have any HD discs yet, but would Casablanca count as "fullscreen" on HD DVD? Seems odd in that case if the native frame is 16:9...

Haven't seen how they lay it out, but you can't alter the aspect ratio without severely distorting the picture.  Probably pillarboxed.

I've seen 4:3.1 movies on a 16 x 9 TV with no black bars on side ( or top of course).. It just fills the screen to a natural looking widescreen .. The same image been shown on a regular TV is just 4:3., and it looks normal as well..

So wouldn't a film like Casablanca fill the entire screen on an HD set,, even if the film was HD-DVD?

that's because the tv expands to fill the space. My parents have their w/s tv setup that way. I prefer the black bars at the sides if it is 4:3.

I think with HD stuff its more correct to say the movie is stored in its native aspect ratio. Whether that be 2.40:1, 1.78:1 or 1.33:1

NO!
If you have 4:3 on a 16:9 without any black bars at the side you either have the picture heavily distorted, or cut off on top and bottom. Or both to really mess things up.
Totally unacceptable in my opinion, give me black bars left and right or bust.

The ratio accompanied by "OAR" or "modified" comes to mind.
