More news from the format war today, and it isn't good for the red camp. Daily Variety has confirmed that Universal's agreement to stick with HD DVD has ended and has not been renewed. Additionally, Paramount has an escape clause in its contract that can be exercised following Warner's departure from the (now dwindling) HD DVD ranks. The article highlights various ongoing commitments both companies have to the format, but we've heard these kind of promises before from studios. Notice there is no mention of "exclusive" HD DVD support. I'm guessing Universal and Paramount will soon announce going Purple, and that will last 9-12 months before finally going all Blu next year. It will be interesting to see how much work it will take to port their existing HD DVD's over to Blu Ray. | | Posted: | | | | Dont start that Erik. I know about the new marketing names, they are a joke for consumers. As if Joe public will walk into a Best Buy and say "I would like a Blu Ray disc player but it has to have Bonus View and BD Live please".
While BD Live spec is "complete" it will not be mandatory so CEs will still manufacture Bonus view only players. Not to mention all the people who bought SA players over the last two years.
My question is will Universal and Paramount bother converting their HDi menu system to Java, their IMEs to Bonus View and web enhanced features to BD Live if only the PS3 customers can use it? Or will we just see simplified releases. |

As long as the movie plays on all players (current plan) I don't see why they wouldn't add those features to those that adctually spend more for the other players. All BD Live adds is web content, so the question is, is that stuff really popular? I don't even know if I will use it. I might depending on the content. While the number of PS3 owners far outweighs the number of 'standalone' owners, statistically speaking, most of them do not buy Blu-ray discs on a regular basis. If they did, Blu-ray would have had, at the very least, a 5 or 6:1 sales advantage. The Oscars will be in terrible trouble if this is not ended soon., as the Studios will lose millions and millions of $'s if their telecast in February turns into another Golden Globes fiasco as it was last night. The studios depend on this Oscar Telecast to catapult their films into Box Office Gold and gain all and any extra momentum at the Gate.. They will loose all of this if they don't end this strike soon., and to quit worrying about whether to go Blu ray or HDD.., Like what is the emergency here?
